Black Beard Powder (Heixu San) for darkening beard hair.
Guafen (Lead Carbonate), Zhen Gafen (Real Clam Powder), Huangdan (Red Lead), Mituoseng (Litharge) (equal parts).
Grind uniformly, mix with water to apply. Wait until dry, wash off the medicine with water, and moisturize with Walnut Oil (Hetao You).
Divine Formula for Darkening Beards (Wuxu Shenfang)
High-quality Jingmo (Beijing Ink, 3 qian, ground into powder), Shexiang (Musk, 3 fen), Shengqi (Raw Lacquer, 1 jin, filtered to remove dregs), Male and Female Crabs (one pair, weighing 8 liang; those caught after Frost's Descent are best, tied at the umbilicus).
First, place the Beijing Ink and Musk in a porcelain bottle. Then, put the crabs into the bottle, pour in the Raw Lacquer, seal tightly, and bury it deep in the soil of a place where people walk, about one chi deep. After forty-nine days (seven sevens), retrieve it, filter out the dregs using hemp cloth, and store the liquid in a porcelain bottle. When using, apply with a brush. Use a finger cot made from fish bladder to blend evenly, to prevent staining fingers which is difficult to remove.
Another Prescription
Kubaijian (Calcined Alum), Hezipi (Pericarpium Terminaliae), Sha (Sand/Mineral), Xixin (Asarum) (each 3 fen), Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis) (roasted until black, wrapped in green cotton cloth, stepped on by heels into a cake, 3 qian).
Hongtongmo (Red Copper Powder) (burned to ash in a silver pot, 6 fen).
Grind each into fine powder. Mix together. Take one pomegranate peel, three pieces of Wumei (Dried Plum) flesh, a pinch of fine tea, and two zhan of water. Decoct until seven-tenths remain, filter, and store in a magnetic cup. Place the previous powders and juice into a pot and cook over double boiler until the surface wrinkles and bubbles appear. In the evening, use a small brush to apply the medicine to the beard. Wash clean with warm water the next morning; the beard will be as black as lacquer.
Seven Immortals Pill (Qixian Dan) is a sacred medicine for tonifying the Heart and Kidney, preserving youthfulness, and darkening facial hair.
Tianmendong (Asparagi Radix, heart removed), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, rhizome removed), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, washed with wine), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, washed with wine), Xiaohui (Foeniculum Fructus, stir-fried until yellow, used in autumn/winter), BaiFuling (Poria, skin removed, used in spring/summer, each 2 liang), Heshouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix, sweet melon-seed variety, nine steamed and nine sun-dried, 4 liang).
Grind into fine powder. Make pills the size of bean seeds with honey. Chew one pill per dose, swallow with good yellow wine or salt water. Or make pills the size of paulownia seeds, take fifty pills per dose, swallow with wine on an empty stomach. Avoid "Three Whites" (scallion, garlic, radish). Abstain from sexual intercourse; avoid contact with ironware during coitus.
Darkening Beard: Apply twice a month for one month, and white hair will never return.
Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis) (stir-fried, 1 liang), Qingyan (Green Salt) (stir-fried), Danfan (Chalcanthite), Mingfan (Alumen) (each 1 qian), Tongqing (Malachite) (2 qian), Feimian (Refined Wheat Flour) (5 fen).
Decoct coarse Lu'an tea to a thick consistency, stew over double boiler until bubbling, brush onto beard, wash off when dry.
Beard-Darkening Sweat Towel
Bichengqie (Schisandrae Fructus Chinensis / Schisandraceae Fruit), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Hanliancao (Ecliptae Herba), Liaoxixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Meishi Zi (Myrobalan), Heishukuihua (Black Hibiscus Rosemallow Flower, dried in shade) (each 1 liang).
Heiqian (Black Lead) (half jin melted, add 1 liang of Mercury, wait for cooling and solidification).
Use three chi of white silk to wrap all the above medicines together. Boil in five jin of good rice vinegar in a clay pot until dry. Remove, wrap the silk in green cloth, and dry in the shade to make a sweat towel. Keep two or three in your sleeve; they should absorb body heat/qi to be effective. Rub on the beard whenever desired, replace every half year, and the beard will never turn white. The boiled lead can be hammered into small combs for combing the beard, which is very effective. Alternatively, the following prescription is also effective.
Take Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis) in any amount, grind into powder, stir-fry in a copper pot until blue smoke disappears and white smoke rises. Spread a damp green cloth on the ground, pour the fried powder onto it, wrap it up, step on it to form a cake, then grind finely again. Use 5 qian of this powder per application. Stir-fry copper powder in a copper pot, quench with red vinegar three times, use 1 qian 8 fen. Add Baiji (Bletillae Rhizoma) 6 fen, Meishi Zi (Myrobalan), Qingyan (Green Salt), Mingfan (Alumen), and Yanshi (Sodium Chloride) each 9 fen. Mix and grind finely. Adjust the amount according to the beard volume, mix with burning wine (baijiu) to apply.
Another Prescription
Sangshenzi (Mori Fructus) (those grown in gardens or open fields are best; do not use those grown on graves), Hamazi (Toad Seeds/Ova).
Ten Sangshenzi (Mori Fructus) and ten Hamazi (Toad Seeds/Ova), equal in number. Bury them together in a jar underground for one hundred days until they liquefy. Add high-quality Jingmo (Beijing Ink) to dissolve. Apply to the beard.
Teeth-Rubbing Beard Darkening Method
Qingyan (Green Salt), PoguZhi (Cibotii Rhizoma) (stir-fried), Huaiguoz (Sophorae Fructus), Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) (soaked in wine for three days, stir-fried), Digupi (Lycii Cortex) (each 1 liang), Baiyaojian (Pill of Hundred Medicines), Meishi Zi (Myrobalan) (each 1 qian), Beixixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (2 qian).
Grind together finely. Rub teeth every morning and swallow the residue. Do not miss a day. Each time you rub, pluck out white hairs; regrown hairs will definitely be black and never turn white again.
Darkening Beard: Hamawu (Toad preparation) in any amount. Clean, place in a small bottle, add 1 fen of Shexiang (Musk), tie the mouth, and bury in clean soil for forty-nine days. Retrieve, dip fingers in water, and twist the tips of the beard; the blackness will spread from top to bottom.
Another Prescription: Grind high-quality ink with Turtle Urine (Gui Niao) to a thick paste. Use a small brush to lift the beard and apply slowly. Do not get close to the skin, and do not use hands to rub, as the ink color may penetrate the bone and be difficult to remove.
