Why do infants have fetal fire and fetal toxin? It may be due to conception after the father engaged in sexual intercourse while drunk; or after pregnancy, if sexual desire is not restrained, internal accumulation of fire toxin occurs; or it may be that the mother consumes overly rich flavors, lacks emotional regulation (anger), and experiences unpredictable joy or surprise, causing fierce burning of fire-heat, leading to impure Ying blood (nutritive blood). The fetus absorbs these turbid substances in utero. These are all cases of congenital toxin acquisition, which manifest suddenly after birth, either within one month or a few months later. The infant cries in pain, with red-purple halos on the buttocks and legs, skin cracking resembling scraping (Gua Sha), or generalized erythema, oral ulceration making breastfeeding difficult, or swollen throat and hoarseness. If not treated urgently, the toxin will sink inward, causing abdominal distension and rebellious Qi, often resulting in death from fetal convulsions. Treatment involves grinding raw Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Dahuang) into a thick juice, mixing in powdered Bovis Calculus (Xihuang), and decocting Flos Lonicerae Japonicae (Jinyinhua), Radix Phragmitis Communis (Lugen), Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis (Gancao), and Uncaria rhynchophylla (Gougou) to make a decoction for flushing down the powder. After bowel evacuation, the fire subsides naturally, and the toxin is expelled outward, allowing for recovery through conditioning.
If there is swelling and ulceration of the buttocks, redness without skin, or generalized erythema, this is named Monkey Sores (Housun Gan). This originates from the father having previously suffered from chancre or syphilis-like diseases, taking Calomel (Qingfen) and Arsenolite (Shengyao), which suppressed the toxin internally, thereby transmitting residual toxin to the fetal origin. It must be treated with Hougan Huadu Dan (Monkey Sore Toxin-Resolving Pill); forty to fifty doses can lead to cure. If treatment is delayed, the toxin spreads invasively and sinks inward, gradually leading to emaciation, timidity, hoarseness, nasal congestion, rebellious Qi, and abdominal distension, becoming incurable. Be extremely cautious!
Chi You Dan (Red Roaming Erysipelas) arises from internal depression of Heart Fire, compounded by Wind-Heat in the San Jiao (Triple Burner) invading from outside, thus manifesting on the surface of the skin. When Wind is predominant, it causes rapid movement, like trees shaking in the wind. It is named "Dan" because it corresponds to Heart Fire and appears red. Its shape resembles cloud patches, rising with wind-rash granules, causing itching and pain. It may appear on the hands and feet, or on the head, face, chest, and back, causing irritability, abdominal distension, fever, and rapid roaming throughout the body. Urgent treatment is required. Cases flowing from the abdomen to the limbs are easy to treat; those flowing from the limbs back to the abdomen are difficult to cure. Treatment should cool the Heart and drain the Liver, using formulas such as Longdan Xiegan Tang (Gentian Liver-Draining Decoction) or Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction). One must also conform to the seasons: in summer heat, use the acrid-cool agent Tongsheng San (Unimpeded Salvation Powder) to resolve the exterior; in severe cold, use acrid-warm agents containing Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma) and Puerariae Lobatae Radix (Gegen) to resolve the exterior. Externally, use a magnetic lancet to pierce and release purple blood to vent the toxin, then apply slices of lean meat; alternatively, mix Frankincense Resin (Ruxiang) powder with egg white for topical application. There is also a white variant named Bai You Feng (White Roaming Wind), characterized by migrating lumps, itching, varying sizes, and weeping ulcers, caused by Wind-Damp invasion. Treatment focuses on dispersing Wind and leaching out Dampness.
You Huo (Roaming Fire) presents as red, hot, swollen areas on the head, face, or legs, spreading不定ly. Applying alkaline water causes a white frost to form immediately; the color is bright and the heat feels like fire. Treatment requires dispersing Wind, clearing Fire, cooling Blood, and resolving toxicity. Externally, wash and dry white Sea Cucumber (Bai Haizhe) skin, apply it to the affected area for one shichen (two hours), remove it, and if the skin turns yellow and dry, replace it with a fresh piece. Repeating this three or four times leads to resolution.
