For mild cases of pruritic sores (prurigo), this ointment is suitable.
Zinc Oxide Powder, Vaseline, Salicylic Acid.
Preparation method follows the aforementioned procedure.
[Formula Analysis] Salicylic acid is also a Western medicine; it has the effect of drying dampness and relieving itching. Its nature is similar to that of Camphor (Zhangnao) and Borneol (Bingpian), but without an odor. Compared to Camphor and Borneol, it is milder and more bland. It can be used for mild conditions, but it is not sufficient for severe itching.
For hard and swollen ulcerative lesions, they can be reduced in the early stage. Although internal decoctions are the main treatment, external medicinal powders are indispensable. The established methods of Mr. Zhu are simple and easy to perform, dividing conditions only into Yin and Yang syndromes. Assessing the severity makes it universally applicable. It can be regarded as a guiding chariot or a golden needle passed down to benefit the world.
It can be used for the initial stage of carbuncles and furuncles, regardless of depth or size.
Shangyao Gui (Cinnamon Twig, removed coarse bark, 2 liang), Beixixin (Asarum Root, cleaned of mud/dirt, 1 liang), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 8 qian), Gongdingxiang (Clove, 5 qian).
Each is ground into fine powder. For minor cases, use 2-3 fen per application, covered with a Wenshu Bo Tie (Warm-Nourishing Plaster); for major cases, use 3-5 qian, mixed into the material of the Wenshu Bo Tie for application, or add a small amount of Moschus (She Xiang).
[Formula Analysis] This is a general-purpose medicine for the initial stage of swelling ulcers forming large, hard masses. It is suitable for soreness, diffuse swelling, deep-seated in muscle tissue, and attached to joints. However, it should not be used when heat boils (re du) first appear in summer, even if the mass is hard.
It treats carbuncles and sores with high swelling about to suppurate, and Yang Fa (Yang eruption) in the early stage with rapid onset. It is also suitable for breast sores, breast eruptions, and various carbuncles on the chest, arms, and abdominal skin, which internally involve the ministerial fire of the Liver and Gallbladder, and where Siwen Dan (Four-Warming Pill) and Wenshu Bo Tie cannot be used. It is appropriate to paste this ointment onto a Qingliang Bo Tie (Cool-Clearing Plaster). If not yet formed, it can dissipate; if already formed, it promotes pus discharge and high swelling, facilitating needle lancing, with exceptionally swift and effective results.
Bimazi (Castor Seed, shelled, pure white meat, 1 jin), Datian Nan (Arisaema Cum Bile, processed with ox bile in the twelfth lunar month until penetrated, 6 qian), Ruxiang (Frankincense), Moyao (Myrrh, processed to remove oil, 3 liang each), Jixingzi (Prunus Armeniaca Seed/Accelerator Fruit, 1 liang), Yinzhu (Vermilion/Red Lead), Xuexie (Dragon's Blood, 2 liang each), Shanghao Moxiang (High-quality Moschus/Musk, 3 qian).
First, place the Castor Seeds in a stone mortar and pound them extremely finely until soft and viscous like paste. Then add the latter seven ingredients, all previously ground into fine powder, and slowly pound evenly. Store in a porcelain vessel, tightly sealed, for future use.
[Formula Analysis] In this formula, Castor Seed serves as the Sovereign drug, while Vermilion and Accelerator Fruit serve as Assistant drugs. It reduces swelling and eliminates toxins with speed comparable to an echo. Regarding Yang Fa sores in the early stage... Ancient texts claim that Castor Seed can induce abortion, speaking excessively of its mobile nature. However, I (Shouyi, i.e., Zhang Shanlei) have habitually used this ointment; even for pregnant women with carbuncles, there are no taboos, and indeed, no abortions have occurred due to this. Thus, we know that ancient sayings are not entirely trustworthy. Similarly, ancient and modern Materia Medica all state that anyone who eats Castor Seeds must never eat soybeans in their lifetime, and violating this taboo will cause death by bloating. Yet, when I was seven or eight years old, someone gave me these seeds, calling them "foreign beans." I planted them in my backyard, harvested dozens of jin in autumn, roasted them, and my whole family ate them as snacks for six or seven years. We did not know they were Castor Seeds, nor did we know to avoid soybeans. Fortunately, none of us fell ill. When I reached adulthood, I learned that the so-called "foreign bean" was actually the common name for Castor Seed. Later, upon studying medicine, I saw the warning against eating beans with Castor Seeds, and realized that most medical books are merely echoing others and may not all be accurate conclusions. I record this here to reveal the true nature of this substance. Future scholars seeking real efficacy in medicine must put careful effort into "experience" and "personal observation." If one remains ignorant and merely searches through old papers for a living, how can one avoid harming oneself and others?
