(The pathogenic factor) accumulates in the sinews and collaterals, and coagulates in the skin. Since there are many affected areas, it is difficult to treat from the interior; therefore, external treatment is appropriate.

In ancient times, this disease was called "Li Feng" (Leprosy/Madness), also known as "E Ji" (Vile Disease). Black and white leprosy (Hei Bai Lai), red and white vitiligo-like patches (Chi Bai Dian) all belong to this category. However, cases of numbness in Lai/Dian are few, whereas Feng invariably presents with numbness. Danxi stated: "Ma" (numbness/tingling) feels merely like a slight breeze, still retaining the sensation of Qi and Blood rushing; "Mu" (wooden/insensate) indicates that Qi and Blood have become bi-occluded and insensate, unaware of pain or itching. When Li Feng first begins, the hands and feet must first become numb, followed by damage and ulceration of the skin. The *Ling Shu* states: "When Wei Qi fails to circulate, it results in numbness." The *Su Wen* states: "When Ying Qi is deficient, there is insensibility (Bu Ren); when Wei Qi is deficient, there is paralysis/inability to move (Bu Yong). When both Ying and Wei Qi are deficient, there is both insensibility and inability to move." Furthermore, the *Su Wen: Mai Yao Jing Wei Lun* mentions: "Pulse changes due to Wind constitute Li Feng." It also states: "When Cold and Wind pathogens lodge in the vessels and do not depart, it is named Li Feng." The pathology of Li Feng involves heat in Ying and Wei Qi, resulting in turbid Qi. Xue Shi further believed this was caused by external pathogens invading, with Wei Qi lying dormant internally; long-standing Damp-Heat causes Blood to transform with Fire. Therefore, treatment should primarily focus on Cooling Blood and Harmonizing Blood, assisted by expelling Wind and removing Dampness, using channel-guiding herbs as messengers, and slightly adding Heat-clearing and Toxin-resolving agents. There is no case that will not be completely cured. However, one must distinguish between severity and internal/external aspects for treatment.
This represents the flexible methods within the Feng Men school. Once comprehended, prescriptions can be modified according to syndromes, yielding spring-like vitality upon application. If one sticks rigidly to formulas without adaptation, one loses the original intent of prescription formulation.
