[Symptoms of Cough due to Heat Injury] Dryness and pain in the throat, flushed face, tidal fever (afternoon fever), restlessness at night, expectoration of yellow and turbid phlegm, sometimes with a bloody or foul odor, irritability, panting, coughing, and spontaneous sweating with each cough. This is referred to as Phlegm-Heat Cough in the chapter on Phlegm-Rheum.
[Causes of Cough due to Heat Injury] When damp-heat qi prevails, heat pathogenic factors injure Lung Qi; or when the season should be cold but turns warm, or should be cool but turns hot, all these conditions can cause illness in humans.
[Pulse Signs of Cough due to Heat Injury] The right pulse is surging (Hong) and rapid (Shu). A surging pulse indicates Lung Fire, while a rapid pulse indicates interior heat. If the pulse is surging, rapid, and slippery (Hua), it signifies Lung heat combined with phlegm accumulation.
[Treatment for Cough due to Heat Injury] If the Cun position pulse is large, use Jia Mi Xie Bai San (Secret Home Prescription White-Lung Decoction). If there is a flushed face and tidal fever, use Chai Hu Yin Zi (Bupleurum Decoction) or Zhi Lian Qing Fei Yin (Gardenia and Coptis Lung-Clearing Decoction); if the pulse is rapid and solid, and phlegm is yellow and turbid, use Liang Ge San (Cool the Diaphragm Powder) with added Chuan Bei Mu (Fritillaria Bulb). If there is irritability, panting, and coughing with a bloody/foul odor, use Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) with added Shan Zhi (Gardenia) and Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root).
Jia Mi Xie Bai San: Sang Bai Pi (Morus Bark), Di Gu Pi (Lycium Root Bark), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Chuan Lian (Coptis Rhizome), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum).

Liang Ge San: See the section on Cough due to Summer-Heat Injury.
Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang with added Shan Zhi and Huang Qin: Xi Jiao (Rhinoceros Horn - *Note: Substitute with Water Buffalo Horn in modern practice*), Sheng Di (Rehmannia Root), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Bai Shao Yao (White Peony Root), Shan Zhi (Gardenia Fruit), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root).
[Symptoms of Cough in the Lung Meridian] Panting and coughing with shortness of breath, pain radiating to the Quepen point (ST12), chills and shivering under the right hypochondrium, or spasmodic pain in the right arm tendon; difficulty in expectorating phlegm, or expectoration of white saliva, dry mouth, and hoarseness of voice. These are symptoms of Lung Cough. If Lung Cough persists, it transmits to the Large Intestine. The manifestation of Large Intestine Cough includes involuntary defecation or leakage of feces and water.
[Causes of Cough in the Lung Meridian] Either deficiency of True Yin leading to fire stirring from labor/injury; or inherent dryness of the Lung and Spleen coupled with careless consumption of spicy and roasted foods; or internal fire generated by anger, overthinking, and sorrow. These three factors all injure Lung Metal, resulting in Cough in the Lung Meridian.
[Pulse Signs of Cough in the Lung Meridian] The right Cun pulse is surging and slippery, indicating excess phlegm in the Lung; or weak and thready, indicating insufficiency of Lung Qi; or slippery and rapid, indicating heat-phlegm in the Lung; or deep and rapid, indicating latent constrained fire.
[Treatment for Cough in the Lung Meridian] If the right Cun pulse is surging and rapid, use Xie Bai Yi Wu Tang (Single-Ingredient White-Lung Decoction) or Qing Fei Yin (Lung-Clearing Decoction). If the pulse is slow and thready, use Ren Shen Bu Fei Yin (Ginseng Lung-Nourishing Decoction), Ren Shen Sheng Mai San (Ginseng Pulse-Generating Powder), or Qiong Yu Gao (Jade Dew Paste); if there is heat-phlegm in the Lung, use Qing Dai Hai Shi Wan (Indigo Naturalis and Pumice Pill) or Jie Zhai Hua Tan Wan (Abstinence Phlegm-Resolving Pill); if chronic cough has led to Lung deficiency, Bai Hua Gao (Hundred Flowers Paste) is the primary treatment.
Xie Bai Yi Wu Tang: This is Xie Bai San with added Huang Qin.
Huang Qin Yi Wu Tang treats cough caused by fire injuring Lung blood.
Xie Bai San treats cough caused by fire injuring Lung Qi.
If both Qi and Blood are injured, combine the two formulas with Qing Fei Yin.
