[Symptoms of Cold Damage Cough] Headache and body pain, aversion to cold with fever, absence of sweating accompanied by panting and coughing; these are the symptoms of cough caused by cold pathogen.
[Etiology of Cold Damage Cough] Seasonal cold pathogen attacks externally from the skin and hair follicles, enters internally into the Lung, fails to disperse outward, becomes stagnant and generates heat, leading to phlegm formation within the Lung. With symptoms of aversion to cold, absence of sweating, headache, panting, and coughing, it constitutes the syndrome of Cold Damage Cough.
[Pulse of Cold Damage Cough] If the pulse is floating and tight, internal heat stagnation has not yet occurred; if the pulse is floating and surging, heat stagnation in the Lung has already occurred; if the pulse is tight with a rapid quality, it indicates "cold wrapping heat" (heat trapped by cold).
[Treatment of Cold Damage Cough] If the pulse is floating and tight, indicating cold injuring the Lung without heat stagnation, use Mahuang Xingren Tang (Ephedra and Apricot Seed Decoction) during winter months. For the other three seasons, if there is aversion to cold and body heat, add Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) to the aforementioned formula. If cold injures the Lung and stagnates transforming into heat, use Qiangfang Xiebai San (Notopterygium and Saposhnikovia Powder for Draining the Lung). For cold injuring the Lung in the other three seasons, this formula is generally applicable.
Mahuang Xingren Tang (Ephedra and Apricot Seed Decoction)
Herbs: Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao).
If Lung heat increases, add Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao); if headache and body pain occur, add Notopterygii Radix (Qianghuo) and Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng).
Qiangfang Xiebai San (Notopterygium and Saposhnikovia Powder for Draining the Lung)
Herbs: Mori Cortex (Sangbaipi), Lycii Cortex (Digupi), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Notopterygii Radix (Qianghuo), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Puerariae Radix (Gegen), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng).
If phlegm is present, add Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou) and Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia). If heat is present, add Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) and Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao).
[Symptoms of Dampness Injury Cough] Heaviness and pain in the body, or fever with sweating, or edema of the face and eyes, or difficulty in urination, vexing pain in the bone joints, shortness of breath with coughing; these are the symptoms of cough caused by dampness injury.
[Etiology of Dampness Injury Cough] It may be due to seasonal rain and dampness, sitting or lying in damp places, or invasion by damp clothes. The Lung governs the skin and hair follicles; when the skin and hair follicles are invaded by dampness, symptoms such as bodily heaviness and nasal congestion arise.
[Pulse of Dampness Injury Cough] The pulse is mostly soft and slippery (Ru). Floating and slow pulse indicates wind-dampness; deep and tight pulse indicates cold-dampness; deep and rapid pulse indicates damp-heat; deep and choppy pulse indicates dampness stagnation.
[Treatment of Dampness Injury Cough] For cases with exterior symptoms, use Fangfeng Shengshi Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction for Overcoming Dampness). For damp-heat congesting the Lung, use Shenzhu Xiefei Tang (Atractylodes Decoction for Draining the Lung). After sweating, combined with promoting diuresis, use Tongling San (Tongling Powder). Ancients believed that clearing the Lung would naturally promote urination; here, promoting urination naturally clears the Lung.
