Jaundice is also a chronic and stubborn disease. Without the rapid efficacy of fresh herbal prescriptions, it will not be effective. However, even with such prescriptions, there are cases that are effective and those that are not; does this mean jaundice is incurable in some instances? Generally, jaundice arises from excess heat within the body. If it transforms from Sha Du (Sha toxin), this pattern also occurs. It is essential to first apply Gua Sha (scraping therapy) or bloodletting, and then select appropriate formulas for treating Jaundice (a syndrome characterized by yellowing of the skin and eyes). Careful selection and application will naturally lead to recovery.
Clinical Cases:
1. In summer, a patient presented with yellowing of the eyes, nails, and urine, along with generalized yellow swelling of the limbs and whole body. Previous treatments by other physicians failed. Upon diagnosis, the pulse was slightly rapid and tight. While the pulse suggested tonification, the symptoms indicated clearing heat; thus, a middle-ground approach was inappropriate. I examined the Sha Jin (visible subcutaneous veins indicating stagnation) and performed bloodletting until the veins relaxed. Subsequently, the patient took a decoction of Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong, 麦门冬) four taels and pork back fat (Zhubanyou, 猪板油) four taels, resulting in recovery.
2. A woman suffering from Jaundice underwent bloodletting for Sha, followed by the administration of a fresh herbal prescription. The herbs were crushed to extract juice, which was taken twice mixed with wine, leading to recovery.
Infants crying incessantly at night: Parents, out of love, try countless methods to soothe and massage the child, worrying endlessly, yet regretting the inability to calm them instantly. They often fail to realize that chest and abdominal pain cause this crying. To claim that infants do not suffer from Sha diseases is something I do not believe.
Clinical Cases:
1. Zhu Guanghan’s two-year-old daughter suddenly began crying and jumping uncontrollably at midnight. Suspecting chest and abdominal pain, I applied Gua Sha using sesame oil. After the Sha appeared, she recovered without medication.
2. Wang Hongfu’s two-year-old son cried deeply into the night, continuing until morning. My fourth son, Duan Ying, was summoned to examine him. He found Sha Jin on the inner aspect of the left knee. One needle puncture released dark purple-black toxic blood. Fangfeng Shengjin Tang (Siler Decoction for Victory over Gold) was prescribed with added Yam Bean (Maiya, 麦芽), served slightly chilled, which stabilized the condition.
For children suffering from this condition, the standard treatment involves herbs that disperse wind, resolve phlegm, and settle fright. However, there are cases where dispersing wind fails to remove heat, resolving phlegm fails to eliminate phlegm, and settling fright exacerbates agitation. This likely stems from an incorrect assessment of the underlying pathology. I have encountered such cases where the symptoms were complex; upon identifying signs of Sha, treating it as a Sha disease proved highly effective.
Clinical Cases:
1. Yue Ruisheng’s young son presented with fever, flushed face, continuous phlegm-wheezing, upward deviation of the eyes, and heavy lethargy. Other physicians could not treat him. Upon my examination, the pulse was tight and rapid. First, Yuanhong San (Round Red Powder) was administered with slightly cool water. His family performed Gua Sha. Although Sha appeared, he did not recover immediately. Hetuan Xuanhua Yin (Harmonizing Spleen and Promoting Transformation Drink) was given, along with finely ground Weixin Dahuang Wan (Asarum and Rhubarb Pills), served slightly chilled, after which he stabilized.
2. Gao Zizhan’s one-year-old daughter suffered from phlegm-cough, fever, convulsions of the hands and feet, and unconsciousness. My son Duan Ying examined her. The pulse at the Tiger’s Mouth (Hukou, 虎口) was imperceptible, and all six pulses were deep and hidden. Examining the legs for Sha, he punctured one point, releasing dark purple-black toxic blood. Jiuku Dan (Pill for Saving from Suffering) was administered with clear tea, slightly chilled. When this failed, Sanxiang San (Three Fragrances Powder) was given with slightly cool water, leading to recovery.
