To treat consumptive disease (Xulao) with emaciation and damage, tidal fever with night sweats, seminal emission, cough, and all symptoms of hemorrhage fully present; where the pulse is floating and hollow (Kou), soft, deficient, and large, slow and迟 (Chi) with no force, or deep, slow, choppy, weak, thin, knotted, intermittent, and without force—all indicating deficiency and insufficiency that can be tonified—this main prescription should be used.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, select high-grade Korean Ginseng, 5 fen) Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, outer skin white, inner flesh yellow, soft and fibrous, stir-fried with honey, 1 qian) Da Gan Cao (Licorice Root, roasted, 5 fen) Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, baked, 1 qian) Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, avoid iron, crush with wooden pestle, 1 qian) Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, 15 grains) Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix, 1 qian) Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Radix, remove heart and peel, 1 qian) Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, remove heart, 1 qian)
The above twelve herbs are all carefully verified against *Bencao Gangmu* (Compendium of Materia Medica) and based on personal experience; they are most pertinent to internal injury and fire diseases. Not a single herb should be omitted. If there are residual symptoms, modifications must be made according to the aforementioned conditions to hit the mark precisely. Moreover, the previous methods of modification may not cover every aspect of the pathology; one should cross-reference them with the subsequent discussion on herb properties, ensuring accuracy in targeting the root cause.
Note: Ancient prescriptions for treating tuberculosis-like consumption rarely omitted Ren Shen (Ginseng) and Huang Qi (Astragalus), likely because they grasped the essence of the pathology. However, modern practitioners, confused by the theories of Wang Haogu and others, fear these herbs as if they were snakes and scorpions, leading to their abandonment as classic treatments. I believe that ancient physicians formulated prescriptions with mastery over mutual restraint and compatibility, sharing only those proven through experience. Mediocre doctors with shallow knowledge cannot comprehend this subtlety but instead rashly criticize, causing physicians to harbor these misconceptions until death. Upon verifying the ingredients in these formulas against *Bencao*, one finds that none fail to address the pathology. However, one or two herbs in some formulas have slightly impure properties that may hinder Yin fluids, so I have tentatively excluded them. For example, Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) in Le Shi Jian Zhong Tang; Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber) in Huang Qi Bie Jia San, Huang Qi Fu Lei Tang, Ren Shen Huang Qi San, and Ge Jie San; Bai Fan (Alumen) in Hua Gai San; and She Xiang (Moschus) in Tai Ping Wan. These herbs are slightly harsh and drying. Critics use this to disparage them, so I have excluded them. Detailed study of *Bencao* reveals: Xi Xin benefits the Liver, but its pungent and aromatic nature may exacerbate Yin fire; Ban Xia harmonizes Spleen and Stomach Qi, but its pungent-warm and dry nature may disadvantage the Lungs; Bai Fan can劫痰 (forcefully resolve phlegm), but its cold nature and sour/astringent taste, being a mineral substance, are unbalanced; She Xiang opens orifices, but its penetrating nature may scatter True Qi. Though I am not talented enough to be a loyal minister to the sages, I hold my own insights. The intent of deletion and revision is that future generations might benefit from it. I hereby attach the various formulas below, awaiting selection by later scholars.
