Cough may be caused by external pathogens, internal injury (such as diet or overwork), or blood stasis. However, cough resulting from consuming salt too early postpartum is difficult to treat.
If lochia (retained blood) flows into the Lung Meridian, presenting with a red face and panting, treat with Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Generating Blood) combined with Shixiao San (Pain-Relieving Powder). (Refer to Harmonizing Method 24, Attacking Method 7)
For nasal congestion and heavy voice, treat with Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Generating Blood) added with Xingren (Apricot Seed) and Jingjie (Schizonepeta). (Refer to Harmonizing Method 24)
For Yin-blood deficiency, treat with Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) removing Baishao (White Peony Root), adding Renshen (Ginseng) and Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome). (Refer to Tonifying Method 7). If accompanied by headache, add Lianxu (Lotus Stamen).
For Lung Qi deficiency, treat with Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) adding Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) and Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome). (Refer to Tonifying Method 4)
For Kidney Yin (Yin Water) insufficiency leading to Ministerial Fire suppressing Lung Metal, treat with Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) adding Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) and Huafen (Trichosanthes Root). (Refer to Tonifying Method 2)
For Lung deficiency with external contraction of Wind-Cold, treat with Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Decoction for Supplementing the Middle and Augmenting the Qi) adding Zisu (Perilla Leaf) and Jiegeng (Platycodon Root). (Refer to Tonifying Method 6)
For Spleen/Stomach deficiency failing to generate Lung Metal, treat with Yigong San (Extra Skill Powder) adding Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) and Baishao (White Peony Root). (Refer to Tonifying Method 49)
For dry cough occurring around half a month postpartum, treat with Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) adding Heqipi (Tornillo Fruit Peel), Fuling (Poria), Gancao (Licorice Root), and Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin). (Refer to Tonifying Method 7)
For wind contraction within one hundred days postpartum, presenting with severe cough and profuse sweating, use Jiashen Ningfei Shenghua Tang (Shenghua Tang for Calming the Lungs with Ginseng). (Refer to Tonifying Method 55)
When Qi and Blood are severely deficient, lochia enters the meridians due to deficiency and cannot exit, causing epistaxis (nosebleed). Among the five colors, black is most taboo. The mouth and nose belong to the regions of the Lung and Stomach; if black discoloration appears in the mouth and nose, it indicates the failure of Lung and Stomach Qi.
Furthermore, if deficient fire carries blood upward, not following its normal course, overflowing through the orifices, and the Lung and Stomach are pressured by heat, extreme heat may transform into water/cold signs, causing black discoloration in the mouth and nose. This is also a critical condition. Immediately use Tongbian (Child’s Urine), Huainiuxi (Achyranthes Bidentata Root), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Zelan (Lycopus Lucidus Herba), and Erdi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata and Rehmanniae Radix Recens), along with a large dose of Ren Shen (Ginseng) for rescue. To stop bleeding, take a strand of hair from the vertex of the parturient woman, tie it with a red thread around the middle joint of the middle finger; this method is highly effective.
Around half a month postpartum, alternating chills and fever may occur, either during the day, evening, or night, with symptoms appearing at regular intervals, two or three times a day, resembling malaria. The root cause is: Qi deficiency leads to chills; Blood deficiency leads to fever; Stomach Qi deficiency leads to aversion to cold; sinking of Stomach Qi leads to alternating chills and fever. Only by greatly tonifying Qi and Blood will the disease recede.
If caused by foul blood (blood stasis), treat with Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Generating Blood) added with Sheng Puhuang (Fresh Typha Pollen), Gan Heye (Dried Lotus Leaf), Zelan (Lycopus Lucidus Herba), and Huainiuxi (Achyranthes Bidentata Root). (Refer to Harmonizing Method 24)
If caused by food stagnation, treat with Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) added with Shanzha (Hawthorn Fruit) and Shenqu (Medicated Leaven). (Refer to Tonifying Method 1)
If caused by fatigue injuring Qi, treat with Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Decoction for Supplementing the Middle and Augmenting the Qi) added with Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome). (Refer to Tonifying Method 6)
If both Qi and Blood are deficient, treat with Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Substance Great Tonifying Decoction) added with Paojiang (Prepared Ginger). (Refer to Tonifying Method 39)
If Yuan Qi (Primordial Qi) collapses and sinks, use a heavy dose of Renshen (Ginseng) combined with Fuzi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata).
If anger and frustration injure the Spleen, treat with Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). (Refer to Harmonizing Method 5)
If caused by external contraction of Wind-Cold, treat with Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Generating Blood) added with Jingjie (Schizonepeta), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Huoxiang (Patchouli Herb), and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). (Refer to Harmonizing Method 24)
