Qiwu Baizhu San (Seven-Ingredient White Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction) consists of Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Huoxiang (Pogostemonis Herba), and Gange (Puerariae Radix).
For disharmony of Zhongqi (Middle Qi, referring to the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach), accompanied by heat in the muscles and diarrhea, this formula is indicated.
Zhongqi refers to the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach; deficiency leads to disharmony. Disharmony generates heat, causing intermittent diarrhea. For deficiency, tonification with sweet-natured herbs is used, hence Sijunzi Tang is employed. For heat, clearing with sinking/natured herbs is used, hence Gange (Puerariae Radix) is employed. For disharmony, awakening with aromatic herbs is used, hence Huoxiang (Pogostemonis Herba) and Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) are employed.
The poem states: Qiwu Baizhu San adds Muxiang and Huoxiang to Sijunzi Tang. What is the purpose of using Gange? It treats heat in the muscles and intermittent diarrhea.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Pipa Ye (Loquat Leaf, de-haired and honey-fried), Gancao (Licorice Root), Chifuling (Red Poria), Sharen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Jupi (Tangerine Peel), Zhuru (Bamboo Shavings), Dazao (Jujube Fruit).
After a severe eye disease, if hiccups persist, the pulse is floating and large, indicating a tendency for relapse, this formula is indicated.
Severe eye diseases must be treated with bitter-cold herbs to disperse and resolve. After resolution, the Yuan Shen (Primal Spirit/Vital Energy) is weakened. Even slight external stimuli cause significant discomfort within. When Zhengqi (Upright Qi) is vigorous but obstructed by Xieqi (Pathogenic Factors), the Qi rebels, resulting in hiccups. If this persists for one or two days without relief, the original pulse will definitely become large. Floating indicates deficiency; large indicates disease progression. If the eyes become slightly red and uncomfortable again, relapse is inevitable. This is likened to the aftermath of war and famine, where epidemics prevail—not as a natural disaster, but because hunger and exhaustion damage the Zang-Fu organs, impairing their ability to transport and transform turbid qi. Adequate nourishment from grains and meats can restore health without medication. The Jupi, Zhuru, Maidong, and Pipa Ye in the above formula calm the Qi and clear heat. The Renshen, Gancao, Sharen, and Dazao harmonize rebellious Qi and tonify deficiency. This is akin to the subtle healing power of dietary nourishment.
The poem states: Jupi Zhuru Tang contains Renshen, Maidong, and Pipa Ye, along with Fuling, Gancao, and Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Sharen), decocted together with Dazao for consumption.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Tiandong (Asparagi Tuber), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Pipa Ye (Loquat Leaf), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Congrong (Cynomorii Herba).
For Xiaoke (Wasting-Thirst) with irritability, dry throat, flushed face, and dryness/astringency of Shen Zhu (Divine Pupil/Clear fluid in the eye), this formula is indicated.
Dry throat is caused by Kidney Fire flaming upward. Flushed face is due to stagnant heat in the Yangming channel. Fire and dryness consume fluids, while excessive heat causes thirst. Consumption of fluids due to wasting-thirst leads to dryness and astringency of the eyeballs, resulting in irritability and restlessness. Therefore, Tiandong and Maidong, along with Shengdi and Shudihuang, are used to nourish Yin and moisten dryness. Renshen, Huangqi, Danggui, and Wuweizi are used to tonify Qi and generate fluids. Additionally, Pipa Ye and Shihu clear and harmonize Lung Qi. Niuxi and Congrong facilitate the interaction between Metal (Lung) and Water (Kidney). This follows the principle that clear Yang rises and turbid Yin descends, requiring no further herbal decoctions.
The poem states: Shengdi and Shudihuang combined with Tiandong and Maidong; Danggui, Niuxi, and Congrong; Renshen, Shihu, and Pipa Ye; Wuweizi harmonizes to assist the transformative powers of nature.
