Liuwei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmanniae Radix) is modified by adding Sanliang (3 liang) of Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) and Erliang (2 liang) of Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), which constitutes Bushui Ningshen Tang (Water-Nourishing Spirit-Calming Decoction, attached below).
This formula treats the symptom of "divine light appearing spontaneously at night." The appearance of divine light is referred to in the *Neijing* (Classic of Internal Medicine) as "night illumination like lightning," caused by the upward flaring of Longlei Huo (Dragon-Thunder Fire, referring to ministerial fire in the kidney). One should urgently use the aforementioned formula, adding Wuweizi and Rougui. Although Wuweizi nourishes all viscera, its efficacy is primarily focused on the Lung; when Lung Qi is clear, Kidney Water follows suit. Assisted internally by Rougui, it can guide rootless fire downward and return it to its meridian. This exemplifies the subtle art of "treating heat with heat" (using hot-natured herbs for heat syndromes), a profound method of contrary treatment. Some, fearing its acrid-warm and sour properties, substitute Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), fearing this would cause destruction like thunderbolts. Furthermore, the human body is a microcosm. Yin and Yang naturally manifest as bright during the day and dark during the night. To see objects clearly in darkness contradicts natural laws. A certain patient suffered from this, believing it was a manifestation of essence flourishing, and was so pleased that he could not sleep. I explained the etiology and prescribed treatment. He outwardly expressed gratitude but inwardly scoffed at its uselessness. When his vision did not improve during the day, he begged others to obtain the medicine according to the prescription, but it proved ineffective. If this syndrome arises from the failure of Heart and Kidney interaction, one must use Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Shu Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Wuweizi, Renshen (Ginseng Radix), and Fuling (Poria), to nourish Yin and blood, clear fire, and calm the spirit. This is the Bushui Ningshen Tang. Administered in large doses for five to six days, if the nocturnal light subsides slightly, adjust the dosage based on pulse diagnosis. Even if the condition deteriorates into confusion and hallucinations, recovery is still possible.
Poem:
To nourish water, rely entirely on Sheng and Shu Dihuang;
To calm the spirit, select Maidong.
Although Renshen, Fuling, and Shaoyao are mild,
They are encompassed within the sour and salty nature of Wuweizi.
Ingredients: Dihuang 4 liang, Zaopi (Corni Fructus) and Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) each 3 liang, Fuling and Huainiuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) each 2 liang, Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) stir-fried with salt and wine, Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) and Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) each 1 liang, Rougui and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) each 1.5 qian.
This formula treats difficulty in urination, heaviness in the lower back and edema of the feet, abdominal fullness, limb swelling, panting, and profuse phlegm.
The *Maijie Pian* (Chapter on Pulse Explanation) states: "When all Yang pulses float without foundation, vomiting, coughing, and panting occur." Ren Lao (Kidney exhaustion) makes bending and stretching difficult, and urine flow ceases. Since urine does not flow, limb distension results. In this formula, Shanyao and Fuling are sweet and bland; sweetness controls dampness, and blandness promotes diuresis, effectively reducing swelling. Zexie and Mudanpi are salty and cold; salinity moistens and directs downward, and coldness overcomes heat, effectively stopping panting and coughing. Acrid-warm herbs follow Yang; these are Fuzi and Rougui, used to subdue Dragon-Thunder Fire. Moistening-humidifying herbs follow Yin; these are Dihuang and Zaopi, used to strengthen Tianyi Zhi Shui (Primordial Water). When water is abundant and fire is contained, symptoms such as profuse phlegm and heavy waist vanish instantly. Niuxi and Cheqianzi are descending agents; if damp-heat lingers in the middle jiao causing abdominal fullness and constipation, they serve as the conduits (Juedu) to expel pathogens via urine. Analyzing herbs based on symptoms, their efficacy rivals the Eight-Ingredient Pill, hence both are named Shenqi (Kidney Qi).
Poem:
For Liuwei Wan, Huaiqing Dihuang is supreme;
Followed by Fuling, Shanyao, and Zaopi.
With Zexie and Mudanpi,
Treating Yin deficiency with hyperactive fire becomes easy.
Seven ingredients plus Rougui make Ba Wei; add Fuzi to eight.
Lu Rong (Cervi Cornus Pantotrichum) and Wuweizi complete the Ten Tonics.
Remove Fuzi and Lu Rong from Ten Tonics, and it reverts to the classic Xi Duqi formula.
Add Cheqianzi and Niuxi to the Eight Ingredients, named Shenqi Wan, stored in the *Jin Gui Yao Lue*.
