Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Gan Cao (Licorice Radix), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Man Jing Zi (Viticis Fructus).
Medicines for treating eye diseases are mostly bitter and cold in nature. Excessive consumption causes the True Yuan (fundamental vital energy of the human body) to fail to penetrate the nine orifices, leading to the contraction of Sheng Mai (pulse/blood circulation maintaining life). Therefore, Huang Qi, Gan Cao, and Dang Gui are used to tonify Qi and invigorate Blood. Overly cold properties further damage Yin; excessive Yin leads to the sinking of deficient Yang and the stagnation of clear Qi. Thus, Bai Zhi, Fang Feng, Chai Hu, and Man Jing Zi are employed to dispel wind and assist Yang. Hence, it is named Zhu Yang Huo Xue Tang (Assist Yang and Invigorate Blood Decoction). It is indicated for ptosis (drooping eyelids) with weakness, frequent desire to close the eyes, and a sensation of hidden dryness making opening difficult. For chronic cases not resolving with persistent discharge of mucus and tears, double the dosage of Ren Shen and Huang Qi, or add Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma).
Poem states: For assisting Yang and invigorating blood, Angelica and Astragalus are key; Apply Licorice and Saposhnikovia in sequence; Add Angelica Dahurica, Bupleurum, and Vitex fruit; Doubling Ginseng intake is even more suitable.
Combine Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) and Xiao Yao San (Free Wanderer Powder), adding Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Fang Feng, and Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis).
The above formula addresses Liver Wood imbalance internaly accompanied by Heart Fire, causing pathogenic factors to secretly invade the Spleen Earth region, resulting in eyelid swelling and eye pain. Therefore, Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chai Hu, Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Fang Feng, and Ge Gen are used to release the muscle layer and rectify Wei Qi (Defensive Qi); Ren Shen, Dang Gui, Huang Qi, Gan Cao, and Bai Zhu are used to tonify deficiency and harmonize Ying Blood (Nutritive Blood). When Ying Blood is harmonized and Wei Qi is rectified, wind naturally settles and fire extinguishes, eliminating pathogens that have transmitted or combined within. However, since Earth has been overcontrolled, residual pathogens may not be entirely eliminated. Further use of Huang Lian and Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) to calm heat, and Fu Ling (Poria) and Shi Hu to promote diuresis and drain dampness, will restore harmony to the Spleen and Stomach, ensuring continuous vitality, and the distending pain will vanish as if lost. The decoction is collectively named Chong He Yang Zheng Tang (Harmonize and Nourish Righteousness Decoction).
Poem states: Harmonize and nourish righteousness with Angelica and Pueraria; Tangerine peel, Licorice, Cimicifuga, Coptis, and Peony; Increase Poria, Atractylodes, Bupleurum, and Dendrobium; Though the north wind is fierce, people remain healthy.
Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Man Jing Zi, Chai Hu, Ge Gen, Bai Shao (White Peony Root), Gan Cao, Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix).
Eye pain and tinnitus, where symptoms want to manifest but do not fully resolve, this formula is indicated.
The eyes govern vision; once painful, clarity is lost. The ears govern hearing; once ringing, acuity is impaired. Symptoms wanting to emerge but failing to do so, persisting without resolution, indicate declining organ Qi and external pathogens attaching to the muscle-surface. Thus, Chai Hu, Man Jing Zi, and Ge Gen are used to penetrate the muscle layer and release the exterior; Ren Shen, Huang Qi, and Gan Cao are used to tonify Qi and revive decline. Di Huang and Shao Yao serve as direct treatments for ear and eye disorders, providing nourishment and astringency, restoring vision and hearing to their original state. Medicines can indeed enlighten, just as people benefit from illness. Some neglect minor ailments due to complacency, leading to deafness and blindness, which would inevitably invite ridicule from the thoughtful gentleman who reflects deeply on nine aspects of conduct.
Poem states: Licorice and Ginseng boost Qi while Vitex circulates; Astringency and nourishment rely entirely on Peony and Rehmannia; How strange are the sons of Ge and Tian and Chai; In old age, their eyes and ears are remarkably sharp.
