Duzi Wan (a modification of Liuwei Dihuang Wan with added Wuweizi) is prepared by adding Ziheche (Placenta Hominis), Yanggan (Sheep Liver), Rongrong (Cistanche Deserticola), and Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) to the dosage of Duzi Wan.
Yin essence generates Yuan Qi (Original Qi) and Shen (Spirit). If Yin essence is deficient, Zhuang Huo (Hyperactive Pathogenic Fire) will consume Qi, causing Shen to fail in generation, leading to symptoms such as confusion, delirium, and visual hallucinations. Therefore, the ancient method of Duzi Wan is adopted to treat the Liver and Kidney as a whole, since they share the same source and belong to Water and Wood, which generate each other; thus, they are treated simultaneously.
When the Liver and Kidney are sufficient, the spiritual clarity of vision naturally manifests in the eyes, as if orchestrated by the creative forces of nature. This formula can be taken by the elderly and those recovering from prolonged illness.
The poem states: Yi Yin Wan Zi is a modified Duzi Wan; Ziheche, Rongrong, Yanggan, and Danggui should be prepared urgently.
Da Dihuang (Shu Dihuang, 3 liang), Danggui, Gouqi, Maidong, Renshen, Rongrong (each 1.5 liang), Tiandong, Wuwei, Baishao, Nvzhen (each 1 liang).
For dilated and trembling pupils with blurred vision, this formula is indicated.
The pupil belongs to the Water Wheel and corresponds to the Xun trigram (representing Wind) in the Bagua. A dilated and trembling pupil indicates a struggle between Water pathogen and Wind pathogen, resembling surging waves. Since a still and gathered pupil can reflect like a mirror, its current trembling state causes blurred vision. The treatment method should employ Nvzhen, Baishao, Tiandong, and Maidong to calm Wind excess; and Renshen, Danggui, Rongrong, Wuwei, and Gouqi to tonify Wind deficiency. When deficiency and excess are harmonized, the Xun position (wind in the eye) will naturally become stable. Doubling the dose of Dihuang suppresses Fire and nourishes the source of Water and Wood, preventing further disturbance by Wind. This efficacy is highlighted, hence the name of the formula.
The poem states: Ziyin Dihuang contains Tiandong and Maidong; Renshen, Wuwei, and Roucongrou; Nvzhen, Gouqi, Danggui, and Baishao; ten herbs made into pills to stabilize Water and Wind.
Another formula consists of Shu Dihuang, Shanyao, Renshen, Danggui, Wuwei, Tiandong, Digupi, Zhike, Huanglian, Chaihu, Gancao, and Huangqin, treating redness and pain of the white sclera caused by Wood Fire insulting Metal (Liver Fire invading Lung). If ineffective, remove Wuwei and Zhike, and use Sangbaipi and Baihe, which is also effective. It is appended here for reference.
The poem states: Huai Dihuang, Tiandong, Hanlingzao [Note: Likely a mnemonic or variant term], Renshen, Danggui, Shanyao, Digupi, without Chaihu or Cao, Huangqin, Huanglian, Zhike gathered as firewood, cooked with Wuwei for good distribution. [Note: This poem serves as a mnemonic for the twelve herbs listed above].
Renshen Yangrong Tang with Baishao and Yuanzhi removed, and Qianghuo and Fangfeng added.
When Yang cannot overcome Yin, eye nebula (cataract/opacity) may form, or remain sunken and unresolved for a long time, resembling morning fog obscuring the sun. The comprehensive treatment should use Renshen Yangrong Tang to nourish Yin and tonify Yang. Baishao and Yuanzhi are removed because, after tonification, one should avoid purgative actions; Qianghuo and Fangfeng are added not to release the exterior, but to eliminate stagnant and corrupt Qi, preventing it from aiding Zhuang Huo. This is also a method of tonifying Yang, hence the name.
The poem states: Tonifying the deflected deficient Yang combines with Yangrong Tang; removing Yuanzhi benefits clarity of vision; deleting Baishao soothes Liver Wood; Qianghuo requires Fangfeng to ensure vitality is sustained.
