Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Manjingzi (Vernoniae Fructus), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Baifu (Typhonii Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), decocted with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma) and Zao (Jujubae Fructus).
When wind-dampness pathogens contend with each other, causing severe headache as if the head were breaking, or swelling and fullness of both eyelids, with a floating, slow, and forceless pulse, this formula is indicated.
Wind refers to heavenly qi; dampness refers to earthly qi. The classics state: "When dampness accumulates excessively in the upper part, it generates heat, causing yin to chase yang." Therefore, when headache and eyelid distension occur, the standard treatment method should employ cooling and descending prescriptions. However, a light-floating and slow pulse indicates the pathogen is at the exterior; releasing the exterior through sweating is easy, whereas purging is difficult. A deep and forceless pulse indicates deficiency; warming is appropriate, while cooling is inappropriate. Thus, Qianghuo and Fangfeng are used to disperse wind, harmonized with Xiong and Danggui to drive dampness out through sweat. Cangzhu, Tianma, Shengjiang, and Fuzi are drying agents for dampness, supervised by Renshen and Huangqi, allowing wind to dissipate through qi transformation.
The poem states: Do not rashly use Qianghuo and Fangfeng for wind-dampness; use Manjingzi, Baizhi, Xiong, Tianma, Baifu, and Cangzhu. One might fear that Huangqi and Renshen are inconvenient; instead, supervise with Southern Jujube and Sichuan Ginger.
Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Bajitian (Morindae Officinalis Radix), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Roucongrong (Cynomorii Herba), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Fuling (Poria), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma); optionally add Renshen, Danggui, and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
This formula treats Fengfei (Wind Paralysis) and Fengbi (Wind Bi Syndrome).
Fengfei is characterized by a stiff tongue, slurred speech, and useless legs with difficulty walking. Fengbi refers to the Xingbi (Wandering Bi) and Tongbi (Painful Bi) mentioned in the *Neijing*. This condition arises because the Spleen and Kidney are inherently deficient, failing to adequately transform water and fire, allowing wind pathogens to mix and cause disease. Treatment should harmonize the zang-fu organs and unblock the meridians. Liu Hejian's Dihuang Yinzi (Rehmannia Decoction) is indicated. I have examined this formula: Dihuang, Bajitian, Shanzhuyu, Roucongrong, Maidong, and Wuweizi are herbs that nourish Kidney Water; sufficient water can control the hyperactive Fire. Fuzi, Rougui, Fuling, Yuanzhi, Shihu, and Shichangpu are damp-resolving herbs; removing dampness helps restore Yang from Jue-ni (Cold Extremities). Adding Renshen tonifies Qi, Danggui nourishes Blood, and Gancao simultaneously dispels wind-dampness. After taking several doses with slight reduction in symptoms, equal parts of one tael each are processed into pills using ginger juice and red date flesh. Upon completing the course, Fengfei and Fengbi will be cured. For internal and external eye obstructions caused by wind-dampness, adopting this method should also be effective.
The poem states: The ancient formula for Fengfei and Fengbi is miraculous; Dihuang Yinzi applies Rougui and Fuzi. Shihu, Zao, Shichangpu, and Bajitian, along with Maidong, Roucongrong, Yuanzhi, and Wuweizi, are complete. Fire is born within Water, Water generates Wood; adding Gancao, Renshen, and Danggui is unnecessary.
