Mountain leaves fall from branches, grass insects lie with dew; it is already the weather of slight cold. In the solitary quilt at midnight, sleep cannot be achieved; on the pillow, wet, sparse clear tears. There was no grieving for autumn, nor was there ever intoxication by wine; water and wood suddenly become haggard. Borrowing thick powder to cover the decaying face, marking long traces, the mirror (linghua) feels ashamed to look.
This condition is called "eyes without disease cause," meaning the eyes themselves have no organic pathology, yet one frequently feels as if in sorrow or grief, weeping until clothes are dampened. This is not comparable to tearing up when facing wind. The etiology lies in: first, Kidney Water is insufficient, Liver Qi gradually weakens, causing the fluid pathways to be insecure; second, essence and blood are consumed, body fluids fail to moisten, and deficiency fire presses inward. Normally, tears are cold and clear; occasionally they are hot and turbid, which is because the righteous qi is disturbed by pathogenic factors, so clarity inevitably becomes turbidity. Just as water is boiled by fire, yin must submit to yang; if untreated, ultimately the eyes will not remain intact. Why? Because body fluids are what irrigate the eyeballs and moisten the empty orifices; if they flow out completely, then fluids do not circulate. Liver Qi is what commands the spirit and converges at the empty orifices; if it leaks out completely, then the spirit does not arrive. If there is no circulation and no arrival, the apertures close, and the eyes lose their heaven-like support; how can dryness, blurred vision, Qingmang (blindness), and internal cataracts not occur? Although this disaster unfolds slowly and people do not worry about it, many suffer its harm. Alas, those indulging in cosmetics and scented boxes, as well as women who have experienced excessive crying and worry, often suffer from this affliction. Treatment method: Erqi Zuogui Wan (Two-Qi Left Restoring Pill). If the pulse is slow and soggy, use Dabu Huang Tang (Great Tonification Yellow Decoction) doubled with Gouqi (Lycium Fruit), Guzhi (Psoralea Fruit), and Lujiaojiao (Deer Antler Glue). It is said that when the disease matches the pulse, and the medicine matches the disease, increasing the quantity of substances brings hope of success. Xu Yinzong said: "For one symptom, use only one herb; treat the signs before they emerge; pure qi leads to faster recovery." This is deceiving the world and stealing fame, merely providing ammunition for shallow mouths.
What is the shape of Tongshen Sanda (Pupil Dilatation)? Xunkuo (the area around the pupil) is still barely larger than a thread. Essence and Qi both decline, Wind and Fire gather; light shakes like silver seas generating waves; karmic illness arrives, my life is finished; even if favored by Heaven, human harmony is lost.
This condition specifically discusses Jjing (pupil) dilatation. Looking obliquely towards brightness, below the Fenglun (cornea/iris), there is occasionally a narrow ring, sometimes extremely thin like a line. Generally, people with irritable and angry dispositions, as well as those addicted to alcohol and fond of pickled, roasted, and strong-flavored foods, can stimulate true Qi brightly and generate Phlegm-Fire secretly. This consumes five or six parts out of ten of the Gallbladder and Kidney's essence and fluids, causing Xun-Wind and Lei-Fire to mutually overact, thereby rendering Shuilun (water wheel/pupil) dysfunctional. Meanwhile, Shengao (spiritual paste/vitreous humor) wanders and deteriorates, changing color abnormally. Vision is like looking through a glass mirror; although distant objects are seen, only large ones are visible, not small ones. At this time, careful examination shows that if there are no internal cataract colors and contraction is possible, it is treatable, but delay is inadvisable. Delay causes Qi to settle and Gaosun (vitreous damage); not only can it not contract, it cannot even move. When opacities form, or after formation the dilation remains unchanged, blindness is inevitable. One syndrome involves sudden dilatation due to violent anger, with light immediately failing to converge; there is no initial or gradual stage, so medication is unnecessary. Another involves dilatation caused by physical impact, similar to the violent anger syndrome, which is also left untreated. If head-wind pain attacks, spirit scatters, and Yangguang (sunlight/gaze) abruptly ceases, this is a Wind transformation and must not be confused with the previous names.
