Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis), Digupi (Cortex Lycii Radicis) (each 1 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (5 qian), Nuomi (Oryza Sativa Glutinosa) (1 spoon), or add Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) and Lianlian (Rhizoma Coptidis) each 3 qian.
The correct color of the Lung Metal is white. When Lung deficiency leads to fire dryness, causing persistent redness of the eyes, it indicates invasion by a thief pathogen. Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis) and Digupi (Cortex Lycii Radicis) are light in quality and slightly cold in nature; their lightness allows them to reach the upper Jiao (the Lung, metaphorically the canopy), and their coldness directly targets the Qi Sea. Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) and Nuomi (Oryza Sativa Glutinosa) are sweet in taste and pure/thick in nature; sweetness tonifies Spleen Earth to generate Lung Metal, and purity/thickness helps resolve pathogens and support righteous Qi. Li Shizhen stated: "This is the standard for all formulas treating the Lung." I believe that for deficient heat in the Qi level, taking this powder once will clear the condition, and effectiveness will naturally be seen. If it is excess fire in the Blood level, one must add Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) and Lianlian (Rhizoma Coptidis) or use the following formula for precise treatment.
Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), Xuanfuhua (Capitium Inulae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Baijuhua (Flos Chrysanthemi Indici), Tinglizi (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae).
For swelling of the sclera with pain day and night, this formula is indicated.
Swelling of the sclera is due to obstruction of Lung Qi. Pain day and night is due to attacking Lung Fire. For cases involving interior cold, dispersion and resolution are required; thus, Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), Xuanfuhua (Capitium Inulae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), and Baijuhua (Flos Chrysanthemi Indici) are used. For cases involving upward attack, cold herbs that descend are needed; thus, Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), and Tinglizi (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae) are used.
Poem states: Xiebai San consists of Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis) and Digupi (Cortex Lycii Radicis); remember Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) and Jingmi (Semen Oryzae Sativae). Add Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), Lianlian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis), and Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae); red eyes, wheezing, and cough can be added to [for treatment]. If using Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), Xuanfuhua (Capitium Inulae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Tinglizi (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), and Baijuhua (Flos Chrysanthemi Indici), remember the alias Zhi Jin Jian in detail.
Zhuye (Folium Bambusae), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), Jingmi (Semen Oryzae Sativae).
After recovery from Shanghan (Cold Damage), with emaciation, shortness of breath, rebellious Qi with desire to vomit, and sudden onset of eye disease, this formula is indicated.
Shanghan (Cold Damage) recovers through sweating, vomiting, or purging, naturally leading to emaciation and shortness of breath. Qi deficiency fails to generate body fluids, so dryness-fire attacks upward, causing rebellious Qi and desire to vomit, and sudden onset of eye disease. Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhuye (Folium Bambusae), and Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis) are used to release the muscle layer and clear excess heat; Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) are used to scatter rebellion and tonify deficiency. As for Jingmi (Semen Oryzae Sativae), it is feared that Zhuye (Folium Bambusae) and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) are too cold and damage the Stomach, so it is used to harmonize the Middle Qi. Another prescription removes Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis), and Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata), using Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), and Bohe (Herba Menthae) to treat Stomach excess with thirst. Li Shicai said: For Yangming exterior excess, use Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) and Gegen (Radix Puerariae) to release the muscle layer; for interior excess, use Chengqi Tang (Harmonizing the Lower Jiao Decoction) to purge downward. The "Stomach excess" mentioned here does not imply stagnation, but merely excessive Yang dominance. When Fire is prosperous, Metal is imprisoned; thus, Zhuye (Folium Bambusae) clears Fire, Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi) clears Metal, Bohe (Herba Menthae) disperses above, Mutong (Caulis Akebiae) drains below, and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) and Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) enter Wu Tu (Stomach Earth) directly to pacify the center. In this way, the steaming heat retreats, and body fluids are generated accordingly. Eyelid swelling resembling an ulcer is also treated effectively. For deficiency patients contracting summerheat, with sudden red and swollen eyes, combine with the previous medicine and increase the dose by one or two times.
Poem states: Zhuye Shigao Tang contains Jingmi (Semen Oryzae Sativae) and Fa Banxia (Prepared Rhizoma Pinelliae), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), and Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis); drinking this can eliminate dryness-heat.
