Rhizoma Anemarrhenae (Zhimu), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao), Semen Oryzae Sativae (Jingmi), Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng (Renshen).
Baihu (White Tiger) refers to the Metal Spirit of the West, representing the autumnal purging qi. The principle of the Five Elements dictates that as new qi advances, old qi must retreat. When the command of Autumn Metal is in effect, the summer fire submits and obeys. Gypsum Fibrosum is sweet and cold; Rhizoma Anemarrhenae is bitter and cold. Thus, they execute the command of purification and clearness, eliminating intense heat. The *Classic of Poetry* states: "Great heat drives away the cruel officials, cool breeze comes to attack." This precisely describes the efficacy of this decoction. However, although it is effective, the Stomach Qi may inevitably be damaged; therefore, Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng is used to support the healthy qi, while Radix Glycyrrhizae and Semen Oryzae Sativae are used to harmonize the Stomach. When pathogenic heat floods the Yangming channel, causing internal dryness of body fluids, resulting in symptoms such as eyelid swelling and headache, this formula is indicated.
Gypsum Fibrosem should be half raw and half calcined, ground into a powder. Administer 2-3 qian by mixing with a strong decoction of Herba Lophatheri (Danzhuye) and Radix Ophiopogonis (Maidong); the efficacy is comparable.
The poem states: "Eyelid swelling and headache caused by Wind Wood insulting [Metal]; use herbal juice to harmonize and decoct Baihu Tang; Rhizoma Anemarrhenae cannot withstand the coldness of Gypsum Fibrosum; arrange Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng and Semen Oryzae Sativae to tonify."
Cornu Bubali (Xijiao), Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Shengdihuang), Cortex Moutan (Mudanpi), Radix Paeoniae Alba (Baishaoyao).
For conditions involving bleeding, blood stasis, and blood heat, these four herbs are used. The Heart governs the blood vessels; Cornu Bubali cools the Heart. The Liver stores blood; Radix Paeoniae Alba soothes the Liver. Flaming fire can carry blood upward; Cortex Moutan removes the fire that consumes blood. Blood depletion leads to internal blazing fire; Radix Rehmanniae Preparata nourishes Yin blood. As for blood deficiency leading to stasis, and stasis generating heat, one must inquire about symptoms and examine the pulse, varying the prescription flexibly; this single formula cannot cover all cases.
The poem states: "Cornu Bubali and Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, Cortex Moutan and Radix Paeoniae Alba; when blood appears, it becomes sparse; when blood stasis occurs, it becomes thin; when blood heat exists, it becomes mild; when blood flows, it recedes. After drinking and re-decocting, the subtlety is naturally perceived."
Rhizoma Cimicifugae (Shengma), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Radix Coptidis (Huanglian), Cortex Moutan (Mudanpi), Radix Rehmanniae Preparata (Shengdihuang) (equal parts); another variation adds Gypsum Fibrosum.
Internal eyelid swelling presenting as excess syndrome, with pain radiating to the head, is treated with this formula.
The internal eyelid corresponds to the Yangming channel; swelling is attributed to blood heat; pain is attributed to excessive fire. Rhizoma Cimicifugae and Radix Coptidis clear fire; Cortex Moutan and Radix Rehmanniae Preparata cool blood. The role of Radix Angelicae Sinensis is to benefit Yin, preventing Yang from hyperactivity alone. The addition of Gypsum Fibrosum clears Stomach heat, making it easy for the disease to recede rapidly.
The poem states: "Qingwei San primarily contains Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Rhizoma Cimicifugae, Radix Coptidis, Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, and Cortex Moutan; or add Gypsum Fibrosum to calm Qi heat; Yangming channel syndromes are deduced within this context."
