Zhenzhu (Pearl), Hupo (Amber), Shanhu (Coral), Manao (Agate), Shuijing (Rock Crystal), Boli (Glass), Baiyu (White Jade), and Shixie (Stone Crab) each 2 qian, raw ground and levigated; Xiongdan (Bear Gallbladder), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis), Goubao (Dog Gallstone), Hongqian (Red Lead/Virgin Menstrual Blood), Bailian (White Lead/Human Milk), Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum), and Shexiang (Moschus) each 1 qian. Mix the aforementioned herbs with egg white (Jiziqing), pound evenly into pills the size of Raphani Semen (Radish Seed). Coat with Jinbo (Gold Leaf), store in a silver jar. Insert one pill into the eye, and only open the eye to view after it has completely dissolved.
The above formula treats sudden Yizhang (ocular opacity or cataract-like obstruction) in elderly people and young children. If not natural treasures that possess the nature to repel dust and the quality to polish away turbidity, and if the aforementioned medicines cannot restore clarity to the eyes, then this pill, while beneficial to the eyes, can be compared to the Sui Dynasty pearls. Hence, it is named "Zhaocheng Zhu" (Illuminating Pearl). Although the eyes have their own pearls and the body is itself a treasure, like the red sun traversing the sky illuminating thousands of miles, people do not cherish themselves. They exhaust their thoughts and desires, depleting the Shen'gao (essence of the eye). Once Qingmang (blindness) or Fengbian (wind-induced changes) occur, even possessing a pearl of one-inch diameter to illuminate the front and back of twelve carriages would be useless for a hu (unit of volume) of such treasures. It also treats symptoms of itching, dryness, turbid vision, slight redness, and discharge.
Hongqian refers to the first menstrual blood of a virgin. The collection method involves placing fresh cotton thickly on horse cloth, soaking it until saturated, wringing out the liquid, replacing the cotton, and repeating until fully absorbed, then drying in the sun. Bailian refers to human milk. Squeeze one bowl into a porcelain basin and dry it under the sun to prevent flavor alteration.
Some argue: "Hongqian is a filthy substance, and using it together with gold, jade, pearls, and amber seems inconsistent with reason." The response is: "Medicines are solely for removing disease; such arguments are inappropriate. Hongqian belongs to the Tian Gui (reproductive essence) of virgins; its true Yin is taken to control excessive Yang heat. Therefore, substances like Renzhonghuang (Human Excrement Yellow), Niusou (Plantago Seed/Herb), and Qiushi (Processed Urine Stone), which have biased properties, are indeed counterparts to noble medicines. If one rejects them based on incompatible natures or superficial appearances, there are countless drugs with an outer layer of metal and an inner core of Hongqian. Can they really stand alongside upright gentlemen or treasures gathered in the Jade Hall? Hehe!"
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Zicao (Arnebiae Radix seu Lithospermi Radix), and Ruiren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen Amarum) each 5 qian. Add three sheng of water, decoct to one sheng, filter to remove dregs. Add Ruxiang (Olibanum), Moyao (Myrrha), Pengsha (Borax), Yuanmingfen (Mirabilite), and Qingyan (Halitum) each 1 qian. Decoct to half a sheng. Then add Baimi (White Honey), Xiyin汁 (Xiyin Juice), and Yanzhi汁 (Rouge Juice) each one he. Decoct until extremely thick. Allow to cool and solidify. Optionally add approximately one he of various gallbladders including Xiongdan (Bear Gall), Niudan (Cow Gall), Yangdan (Sheep Gall), Qingyudan (Mackerel Gall), Ranchedan (Python Gall), Ludan (Deer Gall), and Hudan (Tiger Gall). Add Hu Jing (Tiger Eye) one pair, Ying Yan (Eagle Eye) four pieces, Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) 2 qian, and Shexiang (Moschus) 1 qian. Grind uniformly, store properly for use.
The above formula represents the medical standard for eye drops; this condition is treatable. Although the ingredients are diverse, they primarily function to dissipate blood stasis, disperse wind, clear heat, and moisten dryness. For any unclear vision, dip a new sheep-hair brush in a small amount and apply to the eyelid margins. As the fluid trickles down towards the throat, it feels like the pure dew of autumn nights, with a refreshing fragrance. Hence, it is named "Jingxing Lu" (Golden Stem Dew).
