Rehmanniae Radix (Dihuang), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui).
This is a modified formula of Lizhong Decoction (Cinnamon and Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction). Whenever the body's True Yin (Kidney Yin) is insufficient, or due to chronic overwork, one suddenly contracts epidemic heat-toxin causing red eyes. Although fire symptoms appear, if there is clear stool, aversion to cold, and a deep, small, and forceless pulse, this is False Heat. Quickly use Ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) to assist Rehmannia (Rehmanniae Radix), Dong Quai (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomi Cortex) to warm and tonify the Yin aspect, and expel/disperse exterior pathogens. If ineffective, continue administration until Yin Qi gradually replenishes, then pathogens dissipate from within, and redness/heat naturally recedes. If cold-bitter purgatives are used to attack, the pathology will certainly be incurable. I have fully grasped the essence of this syndrome; I specifically present it to warn the world.
Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jupi), Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao), Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus (Yizhiren), Cardamomi Fructus (Caodoukou - roasted in thick wet paper, do not remove oil).
Exogenous Cold invading the Stomach causes pain in the epigastrium at the heart point, blindness, and a deep, slow pulse; this formula is indicated.
The Stomach belongs to Yang Earth. The Liver opens into the eyes. When pathogens are in the Stomach, Wood and Earth contend, making vision loss logical. A deep, slow pulse indicates Exogenous Cold; thus, Aconite (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Dried Ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomi Cortex), Evodia (Evodiae Fructus), Cardamom (Cardamomi Fructus), and Alpinia (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus) are used—acrid-hot substances to support Yang Qi. Since pathogenic Qi is excess, Healthy Qi must be deficient; therefore, Ginseng (Ginseng Radix), Atractylodes (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma)—sweet-warm substances—are used to assist Stomach Qi. As for Tangerine Peel (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and White Peony Root (Paeoniae Radix Alba), their acrid-sour properties are not primarily sought; rather, they drain Wood from Earth and promote Qi flow in the abdomen, do they not? Generalized edema like a ball, without other discomforts, also responds to this formula.
Poem: Add Shaoyao, Wuzhuyu, and aged Chenpi to Guizhi Fuzi Lizhong Tang; decoct with Yizhiren and Caodoukou to completely eliminate Exogenous Cold invading the Stomach.
(Also known as Liuhuang Tingsheng Pill)
Sulfur (10 liang), Psoraleae Fructus (Guzhi/Bu Gu Zhi, 4 liang), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 5 liang), Foeniculi Fructus Salt (Huba Yan, stir-fried with wine), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi, 3 liang), Foeniculi Fructus (Xiaohui), Myristicae Semen (Roudoukou, steamed, do not remove oil, each 1.5 liang), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang, 1 liang), Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chenxiang, 1.5 liang), Piperis Longi Fructus Bai (Baihujiao, 5 qian, steamed), Caryophylli Flos (Dingxiang, 2 liang), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao, made into pills with paste).
In the human body, there exists True Fire, residing in the Gate of Vitality (Mingmen), converging in the Liver, entering and exiting Gen (Northeast/Mountain) and Kun (Southwest/Earth). This fire warms the hundred bones and nourishes the zang-fu organs. If this fire ceases, flesh wastes, blood dries, bones decline leading to tooth loss, sinews decline leading to limb fatigue, and Qi declines leading to faint voice. Sulfur is the essence of Fire; using double doses can drive away pathogens and restore righteousness, uplifting Yuan Yang. The Classics state: When Yang is prosperous, Yin generates. Thus, both Yin and Yang are benefited simultaneously. Its nature is hot but not drying; combined with the acrid-intense properties of Aconite (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) and White Pepper (Piperis Longi Fructus Bai), it acts swiftly up and down, like shadow following form, thereby promoting life generation. Therefore, when Fire is abundant, it generates Earth; Atractylodes (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Clove (Caryophylli Flos), and Yam (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) assist it. When Earth is abundant, it fears controlling Water; Fennel (Foeniculi Fructus), Psoralea (Psoraleae Fructus), and Nutmeg (Myristicae Semen) nourish it. The three aromatic herbs—Agarwood (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Costus Root (Aucklandiae Radix), and Fennel (Foeniculi Fructus)—have ascending qi and descending flavor. They not only consolidate the Kidney and benefit the Spleen, cooperating harmoniously, but also serve as intermediaries to guide Fire back to its meridians, preventing isolated Yin from being trapped. In cases of sudden collapse of Yang Qi causing blindness, slow convulsions with upward gaze, Yin-Jue with fixed staring, Jueyin headache, phlegm-dizziness with dim vision, and all conditions of Cold-Lao, impotence, frequent urination, cold pain in the lower abdomen, Running Piglet (Ben Tun), wind-bi, intractable malaria, persistent vomiting and diarrhea, indigestion of cold accumulation, chest fullness, post-illness edema, Qi depletion, and Blood depletion, for emergency rescue and critical care, its efficacy is ten times that of Ginseng (Ginseng Radix). However, if a person engages in excessive sexual activity, resulting in extreme bone marrow depletion, soreness/shrinking of waist and spine, and reluctance to move, although this pill seems symptomatic, not even one grain should be taken lightly. The reason is that when Water is deficient, Fire becomes more prosperous; adding Sulfur further depletes Kidney Essence. Market physicians kill people with it, and crowds slander it as poison; is this not such a case? Hehe.
Select Sulfur that is extremely loose, extremely yellow, and broken like rice grains. Place it in a wide pot, melt over charcoal stove fire, and stir constantly with mulberry branches. Prepare sufficient aged rice vinegar and a basin of soy milk water. If smoke becomes dense and flames threaten, urgently pour vinegar to extinguish. Melt and stir again until extremely clear, then pour into a porcelain basin. Wait for cooling, then crush, melt, and stir as before. After nine cycles, the pill is complete, hence called "Nine Turns". Float in spring water for over ten days to remove fire toxicity. Clarify with new yellow mud water, mung beans, and Licorice slices (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), boil for one day and night, wash clean, and dry in the sun.
Nutmeg (Myristicae Semen) is largely similar to Clove (Caryophylli Flos) and Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomi Cortex); its subtle nature/flavor lies in roasting wrapped in sesame oil dough, or moistening with water and steaming on rice for one or two meals. Market physicians roast in paper over fire endlessly, losing fragrance instantly. Some even roast corn kernels, grind to powder, soak in oil to pass off as fake goods—laughable and hateful.
This pill was originally named Tingsheng, not recorded in other books, origin unknown. It is now prevalent in Jiangxi and Fujian. I obtained the prescription, refined it according to method, and those with matching symptoms respond effectively. However, the original formula uses one jin of Sulfur, which seems excessive; I reduced it by six liang. Also, taking this caused endless diarrhea; I added Nutmeg (Myristicae Semen) and White Pepper (Piperis Longi Fructus Bai), dosing from one qian to five qian. Over time, the intestines and stomach became comfortable, and energy doubled. Truly a divine product. Note this to spread its transmission.
Poem: Tingsheng relies not only on Sandalwood and Sulfur; skillfully combining Aconite, Clove, Agarwood, Atractylodes, and Costus Root; Pepper, Cardamom, Fennel, and Psoralea; supplementing Bone Marrow extends longevity.
