Cloudy nebula (nebula) develops after illness; if redness and erosion persist for a long time, the nebula obscures the pupil. If the center of the nebula is neither yellow nor red, vision remains possible; treat with Yanggan Wan (Sheep Liver Pill), which contains Tribuli Fructus (Baijili), Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Haliotidis Concha (Shueoming), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shengdihuang), Corni Fructus (Chushizi), Sophorae Tonkinensis Fructus (Huaijiao), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Pruni Semen (Ruiren), and Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng).
[Note] Nebula developing after suffering from other diseases is referred to as "post-illness nebula." Initially, there is redness and erosion; over time, a cloudy nebula gradually forms, obscuring the pupil and causing blindness. The physician should carefully examine the nebula. If it is neither yellow nor red in the center and light can still pass through (allowing some vision), it is treatable. Regular intake of Yanggan Wan (Sheep Liver Pill) will lead to recovery.
Formula for Yanggan Wan (Sheep Liver Pill):
Male sheep liver (one whole), Tribuli Fructus (Baijili, stir-fried, thorns removed, 1 liang), Chrysanthemi Flos (Juhua, stems and leaves removed, 1 liang), Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong, 3 qian), Haliotidis Concha (Shueoming, 1 liang), Rehmanniae Radix Preparata (Shengdihuang, 1 liang), Corni Fructus (Chushizi, 5 qian), Sophorae Tonkinensis Fructus (Huaijiao, stir-fried, 5 qian), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 5 qian), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, 5 qian), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie, 2.5 qian), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 5 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 5 qian), Pruni Semen (Ruiren, shell and oil removed, 7 qian), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 2 qian).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Take one male sheep liver, blanch in boiling water, mix with the powdered herbs, and pound into pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 50–60 pills per dose, on an empty stomach, washed down with Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction).
Phlegm nodules arise in the eyelids due to the accumulation of phlegm-fire. The nodule resembles a bean, is hard, and painless. If untreated, it may develop into a goiter-like swelling (ying) that ruptures and discharges pus and blood. Treat with Fangfeng Sanjie Tang (Saposhnikovia Scattering Nodules Decoction), containing Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Arisaematis Rhizoma Preparatum (Heishen), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishaoyao), Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus (Zhebeimu), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), and Tinosporae Caulis (Tianhuafen).
[Note] The syndrome of phlegm nodules in the eyelids results from the aggregation of phlegm and fire. It occurs outside the palpebral conjunctiva, presenting as a subcutaneous nodule resembling a bean, hard and painless. Fangfeng Sanjie Tang (Saposhnikovia Scattering Nodules Decoction) should be used to resolve phlegm and clear heat. If left untreated for a long time, it may enlarge into a goiter-like mass (ying); if it ruptures, it becomes a fistula (lou), which is difficult to treat.
Formula for Fangfeng Sanjie Tang (Saposhnikovia Scattering Nodules Decoction):
Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Arisaematis Rhizoma Preparatum (Heishen), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishaoyao), Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus (Zhebeimu), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Tinosporae Caulis (Tianhuafen) (each 8 fen).
Grind into coarse powder. Add two cups of water, decoct until one cup remains. Strain and take warm after meals.
