Infants with congenital cataracts suffer from eye disorders before birth due to maternal heat rushing up to the fetal brain. Treatment should employ Hu Jing Wan (Protect the Eye Pill), comprising Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), and Heishen (Ginseng Radix Rubra).
[Note] Congenital cataract refers to a condition where, while in the womb, the fetus is affected by excessive intake of spicy foods by the mother, causing internal heat to rush to the fetal brain. After birth, the infant develops cataracts. The appropriate treatment is Hu Jing Wan (Protect the Eye Pill).
Formula for Hu Jing Wan (Protect the Eye Pill):
Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (5 qian), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (5 qian), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (3 qian), Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma) (5 qian), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (5 qian), Heishen (Ginseng Radix Rubra) (1 liang).
Grind the above herbs into a fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take ten pills on an empty stomach with clear tea.
External obstructions include sudden redness with blood flooding the pupil, hard eyeball, prolapse of red membrane, and upward rush of yellow membrane; crab-eye, spiral-shell protrusion, and pterygium; chicken-comb and clam-flesh lesions presenting with similar pain; proptosis, leaking tear duct connected to haw-eye fixation; inverted eyelashes and adhesion of palpebral flesh; red veins, white depression of corneal opacity, black pearl-like opacity; wind-drawn deviation, deep ice-flake opacity, and adherent eyelids; jade-opacity floating full, membrane entering the water wheel (lens/iris complex), counter-clockwise or clockwise opacity growth; wind-grain granules on eyelids and turbid cornea; injuries from blunt force, puncture wounds, and needle-like pain; itchy eyes with tearing and dermatitis; external heat, cold damage, and liver heat; sequelae from other diseases involving phlegm nodules and Tian Shui Xing (a specific disease); green blindness, red rot, ulcerative diseases, rolling pivot obstruction, growths, and trachoma. Although strabismus in children is minor, squinting is lighter still. These constitute the forty-eight general names of external obstructions; thorough study reveals the nature of each syndrome.
