According to the mechanism of Gan syndrome (a chronic consumptive disease in children caused by malnutrition or irregular diet), it is all due to unregulated diet and imbalance between hunger and fullness, resulting in abdominal distension and sallow complexion. Severe cases may endanger life, while mild cases may damage the eyes. Do not treat only the eyes; instead, directly treat the Gan syndrome, and the eye disease will heal spontaneously. It is strictly forbidden to consume fried dough products, roasted, or deep-fried foods.

Regarding pediatric Gan eye (ocular lesions caused by Gan accumulation), regardless of whether the child is fat or thin, if the sclera (white part of the eye) first shows yellowish discoloration accompanied by white wrinkling and elevation, followed by slight redness and discharge of eye secretion, photophobia with inability to open the eyes, frequent twitching of the upper and lower eyelids, and a white membrane on the cornea (black pupil), forming such symptoms: a white halo piled up around the eye ring, within which there is one black and one white area, with variations depending on body constitution, this is undoubtedly Gan eye. However, for fat-type Gan accumulation, the stool resembles dregs like tofu residue; for thin-type Gan accumulation, the stool is small like millet seeds, hard, dry, and knotted. This indicates that Gan accumulation has entered the eyes. Treatment should follow the subsequent prescription.

Pediatric Gan eye involves pus discharge and generation of damp-heat. It is suitable to take:

Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (stir-fried), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), Qinggefen (Concha Meretricis et Cyprini Pulvis) (each 5 fen), Gujingcao (Evodiae Fructus), Shetui (Ophichthidis Cutis Corneum), Gancao (Liquoritis Radix et Rhizoma) (honey-fried), Chuanyujin (Curcumae Radix) (each 4 fen), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (0.5 fen), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (2 fen).
Take 2 qian with tea infusion. Apply Yuanling Dan topically to the eyes.

Children are prone to hunger and thirst, emaciation, abdominal distension with difficult defecation, emitting a hissing sound, ocular lesions generating nebulae (corneal opacity), eyelids closed and unable to open, eye discharge and tears resembling paste, which over time turn into pus, commonly known as Gan toxin. It is suitable to use:

Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (4 fen), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gancao (Liquoritis Radix et Rhizoma) (honey-fried), Manjingzi (Vittadiniae Fructus), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) (bran-fried), Fuling (Poria), Boheye (Menthae Haplocalycis Folium) (each 2 fen), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 3 fen), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Zhen Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 3.5 fen), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (1.5 fen).
Add 1.5 zhong of water, decoct until 6 fen remains, filter out the dregs, and take warm. Wash the eyes with Baiyu Ding.

Pediatric Gan toxin causes white membrane nebulae in the eyes. It is suitable to take:

One male chicken (weighing around 1 jin 3 liang to 4 liang, take a piece of its spinal blood, named Jifei [Chicken Lung], and grind the lung together with the following herbs thoroughly): Chensha (Cinnabar), Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) (3 li).
Grind into a fine powder like paste, boil in pure wine without ash impurities, mix the medicine evenly, and consume it to achieve immediate cure. Apply Saowu Dan topically to the eyes.
