Generally, when eye diseases recur frequently after recovery, it indicates that residual toxins remain uncleaned in the meridians. One should use Qianghuo Shengfeng Tang (Notopterygium Decoction for Overcoming Wind) externally apply Baiyu Ding (White Jade锭) and Saowu Dan (Mist-Sweeping Pill). If the condition recurs annually according to the four seasons, it is because the disease was not treated initially; enduring it until self-healing allows wind-heat pathogens to lodge in the meridians. Subsequent triggers irritate the meridians, causing the pathogen to penetrate deeply. Without timely treatment, evil qi and righteous qi clash and cannot be dispersed, resembling blooming flowers or surging tides: it flares up at the appointed time and subsides afterward. Long-term neglect will inevitably lead to severe conditions. Timely regulation according to the season ensures success. If it occurs in spring, the toxin resides in the Liver Meridian. It is suitable to take:
Guiwei (Radix Angelicae Sinensis Cauda) (washed with wine) Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) Subohetie (Herba Menthae Haplocalycis) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis) (halved dose) Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii) Dancao (Radix et Rhizoma Gentianae) Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) Chao Zhiren (Semen Brassicae Chinensis Preparatum) Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei Preparata) (roasted) Equal parts
Grind into powder, mix with boiling water, and take 3 qian.
If it occurs in summer, the toxin resides in the Heart Meridian. It is suitable to take:
Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) Mutong (Caulis Akebiae Trifoliatae) Chao Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae Preparatus) (1.5 qian each) Guiwei (Radix Angelicae Sinensis Cauda) Juhua (Flos Chrysanthemi) (1.2 qian each) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis) (0.3 fen)
Decoct two zhongs of water to eight fen, and take warm.
If it occurs in autumn, the toxin resides in the Lung Meridian. It is suitable to take:
Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii) Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) (1.5 qian each) Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis) Digupi (Cortex Lycii) Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (1 qian each)
Decoct in water and take well after meals.
If it occurs in winter, it is due to Kidney Water deficiency failing to control Fire. It is suitable to take Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill).
