Whenever the pain in the supraorbital ridge (eyebrow bone) is severe, this is pain caused by Liver deficiency. It is appropriate to take Shengdi Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill).
If the eyes cannot be opened, and the condition is quiet during the day but worsens at night, this is pain caused by excessive Phlegm. It is appropriate to take Daotan Wan (Phlegm-Resolving Pill), Erchen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction), or Qingzhou Baiwanzi (Qingzhou White Pill).
(Treats pain in the eyeball, supraorbital ridge, and one side of the head.)
Prunellae Spica (Xiakucao, 夏枯草) [3 liang]
Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu, 香附) [2 liang]
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) [4 qian]
Grind all into powder. Take 1.5 qian each time, mixed with clear tea for oral administration. Pain will be halved after swallowing; after five doses, it will completely cease.
(Treats pain in the supraorbital ridge due to Wind-Heat.)
Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) [2 qian, washed with wine]
Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi, 白芷) [1 qian]
Grind all into powder. Mix with clear tea for oral administration before sleep.
(Treats pain in the supraorbital ridge due to Cold-Wind invasion.)
Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Chuanwu, 川乌)
Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix (Caowu, 草乌)
(Note: These two herbs must be soaked in urine from a prepubescent boy and stir-fried to remove toxicity.)
Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 细辛)
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草)
Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo, 羌活)
Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩)
(All in equal proportions.)
Grind all into powder. Take 2 qian each time, with tea. Combine with the method of fumigating the head using Chufeng Tang (Wind-Expelling Decoction); the formula is provided later.
The essential key to treating eye diseases lies entirely in carefully examining the condition during clinical practice. One must adapt flexibly based on the depth of the disease, its morphological characteristics, the size of the affected area, and the severity of the pathological trend. Medication should not be rigidly fixed to a single approach.
For instance, if fleshy growths appear at the canthi of both eyes, with red blood vessels traversing the sclera (white part of the eye), this is the morphological sign of Heart pathology. The cause relates to the Small Intestine. Using Bazheng San (Eight-Herb Powder for Unblocking) to promote urination will subside the Heart Fire, because the Heart and Small Intestine are exterior-interior paired organs.
If the sclera appears red, with red filaments gradually invading the cornea (black part of the eye), this is the morphological sign of Lung pathology. The cause lies in the Heart. Using Daochi San (Guide Out Redness Powder) to drain Heart Fire will subside the Lung Fire, because Heart Fire controls Lung Metal.
If white nebulae (opacities) appear on the cornea, manifesting intermittently, this is the morphological sign of Liver pathology. The cause lies in the Lung. Using Xiefei Tang (Lung-Draining Decoction) to drain Lung Fire will subside the Liver Fire, because Lung Metal controls Liver Wood. The principles for treating other Zang organs are similar.
If the disease is in the Heart Meridian, but lung-draining herbs are mistakenly used, it will merely damage Lung Qi while exacerbating Heart Fire. If the disease is in the Lung Meridian, but liver-draining herbs are mistakenly used, it will merely damage Liver Qi while intensifying Lung Fire. This leads to disharmony among the Zang-Fu organs, stagnation generating Phlegm-fluids, turbid Qi ascending, and gradually forming nebulae. After prolonged duration, the pathological trend solidifies. At this stage, decoctions and eye drops are ineffective; only the "Zhenren Chuichong" (True Person Blowing/Insufflation) method can achieve a cure.
