The theory of the Five Elements and mutual generation/restriction mentions that Metal restricts Wood. The Liver belongs to Wood, and the Lung belongs to Metal. If Wood is injured by Metal, it leads to dryness and generates internal Fire. A fatty membrane resembling tofu skin may form on the upper part of the Liver, adhering and tangling without clear resolution. Heat-toxin ascends along the meridians of the Liver to the eyes, generating red filaments (red blood vessels) that enter the Hei Jing (cornea) from the Bai Jing (sclera). Cloudy opacities (cloudy nebula) appear on the eye, resembling stars on a scale, silk threads, or plum blossoms; they vary in size over time, and in severe cases, even obscure the pupil. The treatment method should involve administering medicines with dispersing and harmonizing properties, with clearing heat and resolving opacities being ideal.

Observing these two conditions together: if no opacity has formed on the black and white parts of the eye, but an opacity has already formed in the Liver and Lung areas, how can it be removed by hooking or cutting? One should first apply Sao Wu Dan (Sweeping Fog Pill), then use the Chong Chong method from *Mi Jue* (Secret Manual), followed by applying Sai Bao Dan (Competing Treasure Pill) (formula see *Mi Jue*).

The eye does not become diseased without Fire; thus, Fire is the source of disease. Cloudy opacities are generated by Fire, yet one cannot abruptly clear Fire to eliminate them. Why? When Heart Fire accumulates for a long time, cloudy opacities form on the Bai Zhu (white part of the eye); this represents a mass of hot blood in the Lung meridian. When Lung toxin is deeply entrenched and invades the Liver meridian, opacities form on the Wu Zhu (dark part of the eye); this represents a mass of hot blood in the Liver meridian. At this time, mistakenly using cold and cool medicines will freeze the hot blood, preventing circulation, blocking the meridians, causing the cloudy opacities and red filaments to die in the eye, resulting in permanent opacities, commonly known as Cold Opacity (Leng Yi). The treatment method should assess deficiency and excess, employ methods to invigorate blood and nourish blood, disperse and clear Fire, and treat gradually. The cloudy opacity is like a boat, and Fire is like water; the boat rises due to water and also departs due to water. If the water is completely drained first, the boat will fall into the mud. Since cloudy opacities are generated by Fire, they must also rely on Fire to recede; allowing both Fire and the cloudy opacity to recede together is an excellent method. Apply Sao Wu Dan and Zhi Bao Dan, also using the Chong Chong method from *Mi Jue*, and apply Sai Bao Dan.

Ophthalmologists in the world, when encountering eye conditions, regardless of whether they are deficiency or excess, invariably use cold and cool formulas. When they fail to heal after a long time, they switch to kidney-nourishing medicines. They believe that Kidney Water is insufficient, causing Fire to ascend, and thus should tonify Kidney Water. However, they do not realize that the Kidney is the mother of the Liver; tonifying the Kidney generates Liver Qi. Liver Qi rushing upward causes "brain fighting" and downward prolapse, leading to the regeneration of membranes and worsening the condition. Often, treating eyes with Zi Shen Ming Mu Wan (Nourish Kidney Brighten Eye Pill) aids Fire in ascending, precisely falling into this pitfall.
