According to the commentary: The "Jin Jing" (Golden Well) is located in the center of the black pupil (cornea), appearing as a small circle the size of a peppercorn. It is a yellow line formed by bile constraining the divine water (aqueous humor). If kidney water is sufficient, the Jin Jing is full; if kidney water is deficient, the Jin Jing is depleted. How can one see objects clearly if divine water is insufficient? The treatment method should nourish liver blood to moisten the gallbladder and clear lung metal to generate water source, which will lead to recovery. First, consume Qishi Porridge (formula seen in Volume 2), Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Gouqizi (Lycium Fruit) and Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit), and Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction) added with Gouqi and Wuweizi. Eye drops are not suitable.

This condition arises from the dual deficiency of yin essence and kidney qi, allowing ministerial fire (deficient fire residing in the liver and kidney) to act pathogenically without restraint. The heat and fire fumigate the bile, causing bile deficiency, thereby leading to the dispersion of divine light (visual acuity). There are also cases where brain pain causes the pupil to dilate, sudden anger causes the divine spirit (pupil) to dilate, head wind or phlegm syncope causes the pupil to dilate, and excessive consumption of spicy or fried foods causes the pupil to dilate; the situations are varied. Generally, for dilation caused by wind, fire, qi, or phlegm, it is appropriate to use Jiying Dihuang Wan (Nourishing Yin Rehmannia Pill) recorded in *Yuanji Qiwei* to contract it, followed by Dihuang Mingmu Wan (Rehmannia Brightening Eyes Pill); for dilation caused by kidney deficiency, first take Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Gouqizi and Wuweizi, then take Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction) added with Gouqi and Wuweizi, and the pupil will naturally contract. Regardless of excess or deficiency, it is appropriate to take Qianjin Cizhu Wan (Thousand Gold Magnetite and Cinnabar Pill), but eye drops are contraindicated, as using them may cause blindness.

Shengao (Divine Paste) is the paste-like fluid contained within the eye. It is accumulated from the essence juice of the gallbladder and serves to nourish the divine spirit (pupil). A spot of black luster within the paste is the essence gathered by the kidney and gallbladder, capable of illuminating all things. If blood does not nourish the paste, the divine paste becomes dry. Therefore, nourishing the paste must primarily focus on nourishing liver blood. When red filaments appear on the white sclera, one should clear lung fire to prevent it from overacting on liver wood. If the liver has no fire to consume resources, nourishing blood becomes easy. First, take Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with kidney-nourishing herbs, then take Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction) added with blood-nourishing herbs; subsequently, take Dihuang Mingmu Wan (Rehmannia Brightening Eyes Pill). Do not use eye drops.

Seeing colored flowers before the eyes indicates internal deficiency. This is generally due to insufficient kidney water, causing lord fire (heart fire) and ministerial fire to invade the water. Water and fire clash and contend, causing various images to transform unpredictably, taking shape according to the pathogens received by each zang organ. Seeing yellow flowers indicates invasion by earth's pathogenic fire; seeing red flowers indicates invasion by heart's pathogenic fire; seeing blue or green flowers indicates invasion by wood's pathogenic fire. Just as water reflects objects, each has its form. In the human body, there are lord fire, ministerial fire, and transformation fire. The invasion of multiple fires into the water is ultimately due to the scattering of kidney water. The treatment method urgently requires astringency as the best approach. Generally, the water of the kidney meridian is weak and cannot balance fire; pathogenic fire invades kidney water, hence the appearance of seeing colored flowers. First, eat Qishi Porridge, then use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) to nourish liver blood, and finally use Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction) to nourish kidney water. Do not use eye drops.
