Reading the records in various ophthalmology works, there are cases of crab-eye protrusion (Xiejing) and spiral-screw elevation (Xuanluo), which everyone knows are syndromes of excess (Shi Zheng). As for the entire eyeball sinking with small concave marks on the surface, not knowing that this is also a syndrome of excess, and mistakenly using tonic medicines, thereby adding fire to fire, causing excessive fire qi to consume the Shen Gao (transparent gel-like substance inside the eyeball), leading to the complete destruction of the eyeball, such cases exist. As for concave marks on the Feng Lun (Cornea/Black Pupil) the size of beans or melon seeds, all belong to syndromes of excess, which must be known. One should use dispersing agents. For Crab-eye and Spiral-screw, one dares not apply drops to flatten them, yet for conditions like sinking with marks, one dares to use Baiyu Ding (White Jade Ingot) and Yuanling Dan (Primordial Spirit Pill) for application.
Note: When sores and toxins attack the eyes, it differs from toxic nodules forming in the eye. Eye symptoms producing red filaments and cloud-like nebulas appear and disappear intermittently. Sores and toxins forming nebulas like cysts remain hard and do not recede; mildly causing blurred vision, severely leading to blindness. It is urgent to dissipate pathogenic heat. One must observe which meridian the cyst originates from and should take Qianghuo Shengfeng Tang (Notopterygium Decoction for Overcoming Wind) with modifications to treat it. Some recover through sweating due to Shanghan (Cold Damage), others through detoxification until the toxin is exhausted; situations vary greatly. One may apply Yuanling Dan (Primordial Spirit Pill) and Saowu Dan (Fog-Sweeping Pill).
In this condition, blood stasis accumulates on the Bai Jing (Sclera/White Pupil), rising higher than the Hei Jing (Cornea/Black Pupil) around it. If treatment is slightly delayed, blood filling the eyeball will become a critical condition. It is suitable to take Qianghuo Shengfeng Tang (Notopterygium Decoction for Overcoming Wind) added with blood-breaking herbs to treat it; when the eye heals, the Luoli (scrofula) will also heal. This condition presents without swelling or pain, only a patch of red filaments, appearing abrupt and startling. Except for Saibao Dan (Treasure-Competing Pill) and Laomo San (Old Membrane Powder), other eye drops are suitable for application.
Note: This condition is due to insufficient Liver Blood. The Feng Lun (Cornea) belongs to the Liver. If the Wu Jing (Black Pupil) is black with a slight yellowish tint, shining faintly with observable luster, this indicates sufficient Liver Blood. If it appears withered and yellow surrounding the eye, clear inside, seeing black hairs or insects like dragonflies, resembling coils in the pupil, this indicates withered Liver Blood. Once Liver Blood is withered, Gallbladder juice is also deficient; the pupil may dilate or shrink tightly, naturally resulting in blurred vision. It is suitable to first use Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Kidney-tonifying drugs; subsequently use Dihuang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) and similar formulations. When Liver Blood is sufficient, the Gallbladder and Kidney meridians are also sufficient, and vision becomes clear. If cold-cooling medicines are mistakenly taken, it will become Qingmang disease (Green Blindness); be extremely cautious! Eye drops are not suitable.
