Dizziness caused by deficiency should not be treated merely by addressing the dizziness of the head and eyes. When Qi and Blood are sufficient, Yin and Yang harmonize; when Yin and Yang harmonize, pathogenic fire dissipates. Why then worry about dizziness causing death? Taking several doses will yield boundless benefits. Do not abandon the prescription because it does not show immediate results after one or two doses.
Vomiting is a sudden onset condition, seemingly minor. However, violent vomiting damages Stomach Qi. Once Stomach Qi is damaged, recovery is often impossible. Vomiting can be due to Fire or Cold. For Fire-induced vomiting, one should clear Fire but not merely force it downward; forcing Fire downward draws it into the Spleen and Large Intestine, inevitably leading to hematochezia (blood in stool). For Cold-induced vomiting, one should dispel Cold but not merely force it downward; forcing Cold downward draws it into the Kidney and Bladder, inevitably leading to enuresis (involuntary urination). I have formulated two prescriptions. The first treats Fire-induced vomiting, named Qinghuo Zhiyu Tang (Clear Fire Stop Vomiting Decoction): Poria 1 liang, Ginseng 2 qian, Amomum fruit 3 grains, Coptis Rhizome 3 qian, decocted in water. This prescription stops vomiting by clearing Fire and reducing heat. Its brilliance lies in Poria dispersing the Fire trend and gently guiding it downward, rather than violently purging it. Even more brilliantly, Ginseng supports Stomach Qi, allowing the Earth element to control Water naturally, so vomiting stops without direct intervention. Additionally, Amomum fruit stops vomiting, ensuring cessation after one dose. The second treats Cold-induced vomiting, named Sanhan Zhiou Tang (Dispel Cold Stop Vomiting Decoction): Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome 2 liang, Ginseng 5 qian, Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata 1 qian, Dried Ginger 1 qian, Clove 3 fen, decocted in water. This prescription dispels Cold while using herbs that tonify the Spleen and strengthen Earth. Thus, Cold cannot rise upward nor descend downward, but must escape outward from the umbilical region. It also acts swiftly after one dose.
Diarrhea refers here to watery diarrhea. Cold-type diarrhea is treatable, but Fire-type diarrhea is difficult to cure. Patients may defecate hundreds of times a day, emptying the intestines, passing undigested food, with swollen and painful anus, and hot-to-the-touch stools. This is rare but fatal without treatment. I have formulated two prescriptions named Jiexie Tang (Stop Diarrhea Decoction): Coix Seed 2 liang, Plantago Seed 1 liang, Ginseng 3 qian, White Peony Root 2 liang, Coptis Rhizome 3 qian, Poria 5 qian, Licorice Root 2 qian, Chinese Yam 1 liang, Cinnamon Bark 3 fen, decocted in water. One dose halves the diarrhea; a second dose stops it. This is a miraculous formula. After recovery, use Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) for regulation. These cases arise from extreme Fire carrying food and fluids downward too quickly for digestion. Mistaking this for Spleen Qi deficiency and using astringents will worsen the Fire and urgency. By following the momentum and promoting drainage, Water and Fire are dispersed, hence the miraculous effect.
Wheezing (Chuan) differs from shortness of breath (Duanqi). Wheezing is due to external contraction; shortness of breath is due to internal injury. Shortness of breath resembles wheezing but is distinct. True wheezing involves shoulder lifting and a sound like a frog in the throat. Shortness of breath lacks these signs; breathing is merely slightly labored without shoulder lifting or loud sounds. If shortness of breath is treated as excess wheezing, the patient will die instantly. Shortness of breath is caused by Kidney Qi exhaustion, where Qi rushes to the Upper Jiao and obstructs the Lung Meridian. It appears excessive but is actually deficient. Use Guiqi Dingchuan Tang (Return Qi Calm Wheezing Decoction): Ginseng 2 liang, Achyranthes Bidentata Root 3 qian, Ophiopogon Tuber 1 liang, Prepared Rehmannia Root 2 liang, Cornus Fruit 5 qian, Schisandra Berry 1 qian, Goji Berry 2 qian, Walnut Kernel 1 piece, Psoralea Fruit 1 qian, decocted in water. One dose calms the Qi slightly; two doses stabilize wheezing; three doses restore normal breathing. The brilliance lies in the large dose of Ginseng reaching the root of Qi to rescue vitality from nothingness. The other herbs tonify Kidney and Lung. Mother and Child generate each other (Metal generates Water), strengthening Water Qi. Strong Water keeps Fire in its home, preventing it from rushing to the throat. This method for shortness of breath is fundamentally different from treating external wheezing.
Wheezing varies into deficiency and excess types. Excess wheezing looks severe but is lighter in reality. Use Scutellaria Root 2 qian, Ophiopogon Tuber 3 qian, Licorice Root 5 fen, Bupleurum Root 1 qian, Perilla Leaf 1 qian, Kudzu Root (Shandougeng/Sophora flavescens root context implies clearing heat/toxin) 1 qian, Pinellia Tuber 1 qian, Lindera Root 1 qian, decocted in water. One dose stops wheezing; no further doses needed. Excess wheezing features rapid breathing, loud throat sounds, and raised shoulders. Deficiency wheezing has slight urgency, no throat sounds, and no shoulder lifting. Deficiency wheezing stems from severe Kidney Qi deficiency and impending Spleen Qi failure, causing Qi to rush upward. Use Jiu jue Zhi chuan Tang (Save Extinction Stop Wheezing Decoction): Ginseng 1 liang, Cornus Fruit 3 qian, Prepared Rehmannia Root 1 liang, Achyranthes Bidentata Root 1 qian, Ophiopogon Tuber 5 qian, Schisandra Berry 1 qian, White Mustard Seed 3 qian, decocted in water. One dose brings relief; two stop wheezing; ten cure completely. This is a critical condition. Since faint Qi lingers between upper and lower, cooling herbs to suppress Fire accelerate death. Similarly, warming herbs like Cinnamon Twig and Aconite Accelerate death. When Qi is near extinction, it must be restored slowly, not abruptly. Like embers in a stove, adding kindling helps; adding sulfur extinguishes them. Using cold/warm stimulants kills vitality. The formula’s brilliance is combining Kidney/Lung tonics with Ginseng to enter the deepest Yin, generating Qi. As Kidney Qi rises, Spleen Qi follows, reconnecting vitality. Ginseng also nourishes Lung Metal to support Kidney Water (Mother-Child relationship), saving the critical state.
Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst) is divided into Upper, Middle, and Lower, but Kidney deficiency causing thirst is universal. Treatment focuses on the Kidney, regardless of the type. My unique prescription, Hezhi Tang (Combined Treatment Decoction): Prepared Rehmannia Root 3 liang, Cornus Fruit 2 liang, Ophiopogon Tuber 2 liang, Plantago Seed 5 qian, Scrophularia Root 1 liang, decocted in water. Daily consumption cures all three types. This formula tonifies the Kidney and clears Fire. Although it seems suitable for Kidney Fire, Xiao Ke inherently involves Fire. By supplementing Water and slightly clearing Fire, dampness is dispersed, and Fire exits via the Bladder, preserving True Qi. Thus, thirst resolves easily. Adding Cinnamon Twig and Aconite is unnecessary. Only if chronic Xiao Ke presents with severe lower body coldness should Cinnamon Bark 2 qian be added. Deviating from dosages accelerates death. Ultimately, Xiao Ke is due to insufficient Kidney Water. Purging Fire consumes Yin and aids Fire, potentially causing death. Treatment must tonify Kidney Water; sufficient Water extinguishes Fire. This Fire is Deficient Fire, not Excess Fire. Excess Fire is cleared with cold; Deficient Fire requires guiding with warmth. Tonifying Kidney Fire warms the Gate of Vitality (Mingmen), eliminating upper and lower heat. Use Yinhuo Shengyin Tang (Guide Fire Ascend Yin Decoction): Scrophularia Root 2 liang, Cinnamon Bark 2 qian, Cornus Fruit 4 qian, Prepared Rehmannia Root 1 liang, Ophiopogon Tuber 1 liang, Schisandra Berry 2 qian, Morinda Root 5 qian, decocted in water. This tonifies Kidney Water and warms Mingmen Fire, guiding Fire back to its source. Water disperses naturally; thirst and wasting resolve without direct intervention.
Nocturnal emission over time leads to an open Jing Guan (Essence Gate) and death from essence depletion. People often use astringents, which fail. Early use of heavy essence and Qi tonics prevents this. My secret prescription: Euryale Seed 1 liang, Chinese Yam 1 liang, Lotus Seed 5 qian, Poria with Hostwood 2 qian, Fried Sour Jujube Seed 3 qian, Ginseng 1 qian, decocted in water. Named Baojing Tang (Protect Essence Decoction). Drink the decoction, then add Rock Sugar 5 qian, mix well, and consume with dregs. Daily use stops nocturnal emission within ten days. The herbs are mild and pleasant. Euryale and Yam secure essence and marrow; Lotus Seed clears Heart and stops dreams; Poria and Sour Jujube calm Soul and promote diuresis. Ginseng facilitates action effortlessly. Dreams cease naturally; essence is preserved. The Jing Guan closes, preventing premature death.
Wei Syndrome (Flaccidity) rendering one bedridden is caused by blazing Internal Fire boiling dry Kidney Water. Without tonifying the Kidney, merely clearing Fire offers no hope. Although Wei Syndrome treatment emphasizes the Yangming (Stomach) channel to reduce Stomach Fire, Kidney Water must also be replenished. My miracle formula, Jiangbu Dan (Descend and Tonify Pill/Decoction): Prepared Rehmannia Root 1 liang, Scrophularia Root 1 liang, Ophiopogon Tuber 1 liang, Chrysanthemum Flower 5 qian, Raw Rehmannia Root 5 qian, Ginseng 3 qian, Glehnia Root 5 qian, Dogwood Root Bark 5 qian, Plantago Seed 2 qian, decocted in water. This balances tonification and descent. Stomach Fire ceases, stopping Yin consumption; Kidney Water suffices, controlling Stomach Heat. Mutual support restores flaccidity.
Weak legs unable to stand, with good appetite, facial heat upon hunger, and persistent cough, indicate Wei Syndrome. Yangming Stomach Fire rushes to Lung Metal, obstructing clear descending Qi. Kidney Water is scorched, marrow depleted. Hunger increases Stomach Fire. Without urgent Stomach Fire clearance, Water exhaustion and marrow drying lead to death. Clearing Fire without tonifying Water fails to control Stomach Fire. Use Qiwu Zhishen Tang (Rise Flaccidity Supreme Divine Decoction): Prepared Rehmannia Root 1 liang, Chinese Yam 1 liang, Scrophularia Root 1 liang, Chrysanthemum Flower 1 liang, Ginseng 5 qian, White Mustard Seed 3 qian, Angelica Sinensis Root 5 qian, White Peony Root 5 qian, Medicated Leaven 2 qian, decocted in water. One dose reduces Fire; two retreats it; ten improve flaccidity; thirty cure. Chrysanthemum Flower is the sovereign herb, clearing Yangming Fire without damaging Stomach Qi. Others tonify Kidney Water, Liver Blood, Spleen Qi, and resolve phlegm. Treating Wei Syndrome prioritizes Yangming; clearing it allows auxiliary herbs to succeed.
Bi Syndrome (Painful Obstruction) arises from Wind, Cold, and Damp invading due to deficient Yuan Qi. Attacking pathogens without tonifying Zheng Qi makes Bi Syndrome incurable and fatal. My formula, Sanbi Tang (Dispel Bi Decoction): Ginseng 3 qian, Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome 5 qian, Poria 1 liang, Bupleurum Root 1 qian, Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata 1 qian, Pinellia Tuber 1 qian, Tangerine Peel 5 fen, decocted in water. This strengthens Spleen, drains Damp, warms meridians, and dispels Wind. With robust Zheng Qi, pathogens disperse. Bi Syndrome vanishes after two doses.
Yan E (Throat Swelling resembling moths) results from Kidney Water deficiency, causing Fire to fly upward. Narrow throat passages trap Fire, forming moth-like swellings. Pain is light in morning, heavy in afternoon/evening; relieved by heat, worsened by cold. Severe cases prevent swallowing. Treating as external Yang pattern with Sophora Root, Scutellaria, Coptis, or Gardenia worsens pain and obstruction. My formula, Hua’e Dan (Transform Moth Pill/Decoction): Prepared Rehmannia Root 1 liang, Cornus Fruit 1 liang, Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata 1 qian, Plantago Seed 3 qian, Ophiopogon Tuber 1 liang, Schisandra Berry 2 qian, decocted in water. This heavily tonifies Kidney Water. Strengthening Water extinguishes Fire; guiding Fire down eliminates pain. One dose works miraculously.
Shui Gu (Water Distension) involves whole-body edema feeling like mud. Untreated, fluid accumulates in limbs, becoming fatal. Use Jieliu Tang (Cut Flow Decoction): Morning Glory Seed 2 qian, Kansui Root 2 qian, Cinnamon Bark 3 fen, Plantago Seed 1 liang, decocted in water. One dose expels over a dou of fluid; two cure. Do not exceed two doses; a third is lethal. Kansui and Morning Glory strongly drain water; Plantago and Cinnamon guide it to the Bladder. They drain water without depleting Qi, moderating the harshness of the purgatives. After two doses, stop these harsh herbs. Switch to Wuling San (Five Ingredient Powder with Poria) for two doses, then Liujunzi Tang to tonify Spleen. Strictly avoid salt; violation is fatal.
Qi Gu (Qi Distension) is Qi-deficiency swelling, resembling water distension but firm to touch. Swelling starts at feet, moves up to face. Treat by strengthening Spleen, moving Qi, and draining water. Treating as water distension accelerates death. My formula, Xiaoqi San (Eliminate Qi Powder): Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome 1 liang, Coix Seed 1 liang, Poria 1 liang, Ginseng 1 qian, Licorice Root 1 fen, Bitter Orange 5 fen, Chinese Yam 5 qian, Cinnamon Bark 1 fen, Plantago Seed 1 qian, Radish Seed 1 qian, Medicated Leaven 1 qian, decocted in water. Daily dose. Initial slight discomfort gives way to daily improvement. Ten doses relieve Qi; twenty eliminate swelling; thirty cure. This strengthens Spleen and drains water without harming Qi. Slow but effective. Avoid salt for three months; even Ashi (Ash Salt) is forbidden until then.
Chong Gu (Insect Distension) features lower abdominal pain, mild limb edema, red skin with spots resembling insect bites, and no eye puffiness. Requires驱虫 (expelling insects). Harsh purgatives damage Yuan Qi. Use Xiaochong Shenqi Dan (Eliminate Insects Miraculous Pill/Decoction): Omphalia Fungus 3 qian, Angelica Sinensis Root 1 liang, Turtle Shell 1 liang (vinegar-fried), Water Chestnut Powder 1 liang (fresh juice 1 cup), Medicated Leaven 3 qian, Poria 3 qian, Plantago Seed 5 qian, Alum 3 qian, decocted in water. One dose expels countless insects; two ensure complete removal. Insects gone, distension subsides. Omphalia expels parasites; Turtle Shell and Water Chestnut dissolve them. Alum neutralizes intestinal toxins. Angelica generates blood to remove stasis. Poria and Plantago drain dampness. Parasites exit via stool; toxins via urine. After two doses, use Sijunzi or Liujunzi Tang (without Licorice) for regulation.
Xue Gu (Blood Distension) develops gradually from trauma, depression, or wind causing blood stasis in the abdomen. Food intake fuels pathogenic factors, causing distension. Treating as water or Qi distension harms Qi or increases fullness. My formula, Xiaoyu Danghui Tang (Eliminate Stasis Purge Filth Decoction): Leech 3 qian (stir-fried black, powder form), Angelica Sinensis Root 2 liang, Omphalia Fungus 3 qian, Safflower 3 qian, Immature Bitter Orange 3 qian, White Peony Root 3 qian, Achyranthes Bidentata Root 3 qian, Peach Kernel 40 pieces (skin/husk removed, crushed), decocted in water. First dose expels over a dou of blood; second cures. Blood Distension features drum-like abdominal distension without limb swelling. Removing blood cures the disease. Do not take a third dose. Switch to Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) with Atractylodes, Poria, and Ginseng to tonify blood and Qi while draining water. Otherwise, residual dryness may persist.
