[On the Principle of Tonifying Righteous Qi When Treating Those Who Consume Rich Foods]
The Heavenly Master said: "Rich treatment" refers to treating those who live in luxury and consume rich, fatty, and sweet foods. They wear heavy furs and eat greasy, sweet delicacies; consequently, their Couli (skin pores and interstices) are necessarily loose, and their Spleen and Stomach functions are necessarily weak. Once they contract pathogenic factors, the priority must be to tonify Righteous Qi (Zheng Qi, the body's vital energy and resistance), rather than urgently expelling pathogens. If one only knows how to push away external pathogens without recognizing the urgency of tonifying Righteous Qi, it will inevitably lead to unpredictable changes in the condition, often resulting in death. This must be handled with caution. The prescription uses Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) 3 qian, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 3 qian, Gan Cao (Licorice Root) 1 qian, Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 5 fen, Fu Ling (Poria) 3 qian, and Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 5 fen as the principal drugs (Jun-Chen herbs). If Wind pathogen is present, add Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 1 qian, or Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) 1 qian; if Summerheat injury occurs, add Xiang Ru (Moslae Herba) 1 qian; if Dampness injury occurs, add Zhu Ling (Polyporus) 2 qian; if Heat injury occurs, add Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 1 qian; if Dryness injury occurs, add Su Zi (Perillae Fructus) 1 qian and Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) 5 qian; if Qi injury occurs, add Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 5 qian; if Cold injury occurs, add Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 1 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. The brilliance of this formula lies in strengthening the Spleen and smoothing Qi; when Righteous Qi is tonified, pathogens recede naturally. Moreover, there are ingenious methods for modification according to each meridian, ensuring that these children of wealth never die unjustly due to misdiagnosis. This is the proper treatment for the wealthy.
Master Zhang said: The treatment method for the wealthy is already extremely detailed and refined; no further modifications are necessary.
[On the Inappropriateness of Treating the Poor and Lowly in the Same Manner as the Wealthy]
The Heavenly Master said: "Poor treatment" refers to the common people who eat coarse food and suffer from cold and poverty. They cannot be treated using the same methods as the wealthy; therefore, a separate category is established. Generally speaking, the poor and lowly suffer excessive physical labor, so their Couli are necessarily dense. Their diet consists of coarse grains, lacking the flavors of roasting, frying, and grilling that enter the stomach and intestines; thus, their Stomach Qi can be known to be robust and strong. If one were to use the treatment methods for the wealthy on them, it would likely be inappropriate. The prescription uses Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 2 qian, Fu Ling (Poria) 3 qian, Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 3 qian, Gan Cao (Licorice Root) 1 qian, Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 1 qian, Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 5 fen, and Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) 5 fen, totaling seven ingredients as the main drugs. If Wind is present, add Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 1 qian, or Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) 1 qian; if Fire is present, add Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 1 qian, or Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus) 1 qian; if Dampness is present, add Zhu Ling (Polyporus) 2 qian; if Dryness is present, add Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix) 5 qian and Su Ye (Perillae Folium) 1 qian; if Cold is present, add Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 1 qian; if Summerheat is present, add Xiang Ru (Moslae Herba) 1 qian; if Heat is present, add Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) 1 qian; if injured by rice food, add Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) 2 qian; if injured by meat food, add Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus) 20 pills; if injured by wheat/noodle food, add Luo Bo Zi (Raphani Semen) 1 qian. By modifying this formula, miraculous effects are invariably achieved. This treatment method for the poor and lowly possesses true flexibility and ingenuity; I rely on physicians of the world to examine it carefully.
Master Zhang said: The treatment for the poor and lowly is essentially the same; there is truly nothing more to transmit. It is not out of a desire to conceal knowledge.
