Chen Shiduo stated: The so-called "temporary treatment method" refers to the approach of using medication for short-term therapy to cure sudden illnesses in individuals who are physically robust and rarely take medicine. For instance, if one contracts external Cold Damage (Shanghan), it should be treated with methods specifically designed for Cold Damage; this will not be elaborated upon here.
As for Wind Injury (Shangfeng), Food Injury (Shangshi), Summerheat Injury (Shangshu), and Dampness Injury (Shangshi), all can be cured through this temporary treatment method. In cases of Wind Injury, use Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) 3 qian, Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) 1.5 qian, Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 3 qian, Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 0.5 qian, Fuling (Poria) 2 qian, Chao Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus Praeparatus) 2 qian, Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus) 1 qian, Danpi (Moutan Cortex) 1 qian, Baijiezhi (Sinapis Semen) 1 qian, decocted in water and taken orally. (Annotation: Dispelling Wind Powder.) Although the dispersing herbs in this formula have heavy dosages, since the patient is usually healthy, their Couli (skin pores and interstitial spaces) must be dense; therefore, heavy doses can be used to disperse the pathogen. However, the formula contains spleen-fortifying herbs, so there is no need to worry about the dispersing agents being too strong.
In cases of Food Injury causing pain, characterized by fullness, oppression, and distension in the chest and abdomen, with an urge to vomit but inability to do so, use Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 3 qian, Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus) 2 qian, Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus) 30 grains, Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) 3 qian, Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) 1 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, Sharen (Amomi Fructus) 3 grains, Nongpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) 1 qian, decocted in water and taken orally. (Annotation: Food-Dissolving Decoction.) This formula consists entirely of attacking and resolving agents but does not consume Qi. Its ingenious use lies in employing Baizhu as the sovereign herb, thereby aiding digestion without depleting Qi. This is also prescribed because the patient is physically robust; it should not be administered to those who are weak or chronically ill.
Summerheat Injury occurs when summerheat pathogens invade due to exertion; it is certainly not contracted while resting indoors in high halls or private chambers. Use Xiangru (Moslae Herba) 2 qian, Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) 5 qian, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) 1 qian, Gange (Puerariae Radix) 1 qian, Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) 1 qian, Fuling (Poria) 3 qian, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 1 qian, Nongpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) 1 qian, Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 1 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, decocted in water and taken orally. (Annotation: Divine Elixir for Resolving Summerheat.) This formula consists purely of summerheat-resolving herbs and is also used because the patient's Qi and blood are robust; it is most contraindicated for those with Qi deficiency.
The symptoms of Dampness Injury include edema in both feet, where pressing leaves an indentation like mud, indicating that dampness has invaded the Spleen. Urgently treat with Fuling (Poria) 5 qian, Zhu Ling (Polyporus) 3 qian, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 3 qian, Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) 3 qian, Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 0.2 fen. This is also prescribed because the patient is robust and possesses abundant Qi; caution is required for those with Qi deficiency. These are all methods of temporary treatment.
