[Methods of Treating Heat] On Vomiting and Diarrhea Caused by Kidney Cold, on Heart Cold and Weak Stomach Qi
The Heavenly Master said: Using hot-natured medicines to treat cold syndromes. Cold syndromes vary; let us discuss one or two symptoms as examples. For instance, persistent vomiting where food is expelled long after ingestion; or persistent diarrhea occurring around the fifth watch (early morning), with abdominal pain and diarrhea four or five times. People generally consider such symptoms to be cold in the Spleen and Stomach. Treating the Stomach stops vomiting, and treating the Spleen halts diarrhea. However, why do patients fail to recover despite taking Spleen and Stomach-regulating medicines throughout the year? It is because the root cause has not been identified. The Stomach serves as the gate for the Kidney, and the Spleen acts as the sea for the Kidney. If Stomach Qi does not supplement the Fire of the Mingmen (Gate of Life), the Pericardium becomes extremely cold; how can it then generate Stomach Earth and digest grain and food? If Spleen Qi does not supplement the Fire of the Mingmen, the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner) becomes deficient and cold; how can it then transform waste into essence and nutrients? Therefore, tonifying the Stomach must involve tonifying the Kidney, and tonifying the Spleen must also involve tonifying the Kidney. The prescription consists of Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) 3 liang, Shan Zhu Yu (Cornus Fruit) 2 liang, Fu Ling (Poria) 3 liang, Ren Shen (Ginseng) 3 liang, Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) 1 liang, Fu Zi (Aconite Lateral Root) 1 liang, Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Berry) 1 liang, Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit) 5 qian, and Shan Yao (Dioscorea Rhizome) 4 liang. These are ground into powder and formed into pills with honey. Take 1 liang when hungry. The brilliance of this formula lies primarily in using a majority of Kidney-tonifying herbs and a minority of Spleen/Stomach-regulating herbs. Moreover, it skillfully incorporates warming-hot herbs within the context of tonifying the Kidney and strengthening Earth, thereby ensuring sufficient Fire and robust Earth. Who would have thought that sufficient Water generates Fire? This theory is unheard of in the world. Yet, is it merely empty talk to show off? No, profound principles exist within it. Trials show immediate efficacy without exception. I urge people to pay attention to this. This is the subtle method of treating heat (using hot medicine for cold); one formula can address these conditions simultaneously. Any disease of this nature can be treated comprehensively with this approach.
Master Zhang said: Truly an exquisite argument and refreshing words. The Heavenly Master discussed methods for tonifying the Kidney, but I have further observations regarding formulas for tonifying the Heart. Although both the Stomach and Spleen belong to Earth, tonifying them requires differentiation. If a person can eat but fails to digest, the Stomach is healthy while the Spleen is diseased; one should tonify the Spleen, which particularly requires supplementing the Fire within the Kidney, as Kidney Fire generates Spleen Earth. If a person cannot eat, yet feels fine after eating, the disease lies in the Stomach, not the Spleen; one should not supplement Kidney Fire but rather tonify Heart Fire, as Heart Fire generates Stomach Earth. When people see someone unable to eat or drink, they immediately attribute it to Spleen and Stomach disorders, failing to distinguish that Stomach cold and deficiency should be traced to the Heart, while Spleen deficiency and cold should be traced to the Kidney. The Heavenly Master’s method tonifies both Heart and Kidney, so I need not create another unique formula. However, for treating dual deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach, this formula yields miraculous results. For cases of isolated Stomach deficiency and cold, it is best to treat the Heart exclusively. Therefore, I have formulated another prescription to complement the Heavenly Master’s omissions. The prescription includes Ren Shen (Ginseng) 1 liang, Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome) 3 liang, Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood) 3 liang, Shi Chang Pu (Acorus Tatarinowii Rhizome) 5 qian, Liang Jiang (Galangal Rhizome) 5 qian, Lian Rou (Lotus Seed Flesh) 3 liang, Shan Yao (Dioscorea Rhizome) 4 liang, Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber) 3 qian, Bai Jie Zi (Mustard Seed) 3 qian, Fu Zi (Aconite Lateral Root) 3 qian, Yuan Zhi (Polygala Root) 2 liang, Chao Zao Ren (Fried Ziziphus Seed) 5 qian, and Bai Shao (White Peony Root) 3 liang. These are ground into powder and formed into pills with honey. Take 3 qian daily with plain boiled water, administered after meals. This formula specifically tonifies Heart Fire and soothes Liver Qi. To specifically generate Heart Fire, Fu Zi (Aconite Lateral Root) and Liang Jiang (Galangal Rhizome) are added internally to assist the fiery energy. When Heart Fire is sufficient, it naturally generates Stomach Earth; when Stomach Earth is robust, dietary intake naturally improves without harm. This formula indeed complements what the Great Master omitted.
