**Treatment of Smallpox by Day and Management of Complicated Cases; Treatment of Measles**
The Heavenly Master said: People nowadays consider smallpox difficult to treat because they do not know the correct principles. In fact, once the method is mastered, treatment is not difficult. At the initial stage of smallpox, regardless of whether the child's constitution is weak or strong, one should first use herbs that tonify Qi and Blood as the principal agents, combined with diaphoretic (sweat-inducing) herbs. Then, severe cases will become mild, and mild cases will be fewer. Regrettably, people mostly rely on cold-natured substances and assist them with harsh dispersing agents. This is why mild cases become severe and severe cases lead to death. I now transmit five prescriptions to be taken morning and evening. Within seven days, there will be no case that fails to crust over, nor any recurrence of toxicity. Ten patients will yield ten recoveries, killing not a single child.
**First Prescription:** If a child presents with fever and eyes that appear glassy or intoxicated ("drunk eyes"), this is a sign of eruptive smallpox. If these "drunk eyes" are absent, it is not smallpox, and this prescription should not be used. For external contraction patterns, use a formula for treating external pathogens. However, if "drunk eyes" are observed, administer this prescription immediately, and the smallpox spots will appear promptly, certainly emerging naturally before three days elapse. The prescription consists of: Huangqi (Astragali Radix) 3 qian, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 1 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 2 qian, Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) 2 qian, Fuling (Poria) 3 qian, Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) 1.5 qian, Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 0.5 qian, Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) 2 qian, Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) 3 qian, Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 0.5 qian, Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) 1 qian, Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) initially 0.5 qian. Use three bowls of water, decoct to two bowls, then re-decoct the dregs to obtain half a bowl of liquid, and administer to the child. For children over five years old, follow these dosages; for those under five, halve the dosage; for infants within their first year, reduce the dosage further in sequence. After taking this medicine, the child will naturally feel mentally clear. If the family refuses to administer it, urge them to do so quickly, guaranteeing rapid recovery, and I shall take responsibility. Once spots appear after administration, proceed to the second prescription.
**Second Day Prescription:** Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 2 qian, Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) 3 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) 2 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 5 qian, Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) 5 qian, Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) 3 qian, Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) 1 qian, Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 0.3 qian, Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) 1 qian, Fuling (Poria) 2 qian, Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 3 qian, Baijiezhi (Sinapis Semen Preparatum) 2 qian, Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) 3 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. After taking this medicine, spots will appear all over the body, and their color will surely be red, avoiding the danger of white or black discoloration.
**Third Day Prescription:** Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) 0.5 qian, Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 3 qian, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 3 qian, Fuling (Poria) 3 qian, Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) 2 qian, Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) 0.3 qian, Danpi (Moutan Cortex) 1 qian. Decoct in water and take orally. After taking this prescription, pustules will fill completely, ensuring sufficient Qi and Blood, with no fear of collapse symptoms. Proceed to the fourth day prescription.
**Fourth Day Prescription:** Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) 1 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 2 qian, Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) 5 qian, Fuling (Poria) 3 qian, Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) 3 qian, Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 0.5 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) 3 qian, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 3 qian, Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 2 qian, Shenqu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) 0.5 qian. After taking this prescription, the child will inevitably have a good appetite and desire food constantly. Offer food in small amounts frequently, but do not allow excessive eating. The fifth prescription may be omitted. However, I still transmit it lest the child develop other illnesses due to overeating.
**Fifth Day Prescription:** Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) 1 qian, Fuling (Poria) 3 qian, Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 2 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian. If there is food stagnation, add Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) 0.5 qian and Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus) 5 pieces. If there is no food stagnation, do not add these; instead, add only Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) 3 qian. By following these five prescriptions, recovery is expected within seven days. For younger children, reduce the dosage according to the first prescription. If the child has had fever for three days, use the third prescription; for four days, use the fourth prescription. For complicated cases, use a separate prescription for complicated conditions.
**Prescription for Complicated Cases transmitted by Daoist Qin:** Treats complicated smallpox where lesions have turned black. When others are ready to give up, this medicine administered orally brings immediate life. Ingredients: Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) 3 qian, Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 1 qian, Chantui (Cryptotympanae Pergamen) 0.5 qian, Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) 2 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 2 qian, Jingjiesui (Schizonepetae Spica) 1 qian. Use two zhong of water, decoct to eight fen, and instill into the throat to restore life. Generally, complicated cases result from deficiency of Yuan Qi (Original Qi) preventing the eruption of fire/toxin. I use Renshen to assist Yuan Qi, Xuanshen to clear floating fire, and Chenpi to resolve phlegm and open the stomach, so that Renshen acts without obstruction, enhancing each other's effects. Jingjie promotes eruption and guides fire back to its meridian; Danggui generates new blood, removes old stasis, and resolves qi stagnation; Chantui also detoxifies and clears macules. How can ordinary people know such a wonderful method? It must not be used at the onset; it is only for complicated cases. One dose restores vitality; a second dose is unnecessary.
**Prescription for Complicated Smallpox transmitted by Thunder Deity:** Complicated smallpox is most pitiable. The body appears shrouded in black gas, the mouth cannot speak, and food cannot be swallowed. People abandon such cases in ditches, and physicians ignore them. Who knows that all such individuals can be saved? I have a miraculous prescription named Bi Quan Tang (Sure Recovery Decoction). Ingredients: Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) 3 qian, Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) 1 liang, Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) 1 qian, Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) 1 liang, Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 0.3 qian. Decoct in water to five fen and administer. Upon entering the throat, the eyes open; shortly after, the body moves; eventually, spirit returns, speech resumes, and swallowing is restored. No other medicines need be taken. The smallpox will heal completely starting from the face. This is an extremely miraculous and divine prescription. Complicated smallpox generally stems from Qi deficiency preventing the eruption of fire/toxin. Fire-toxin remains trapped inside without release, making the form resemble death, although the Zang-Fu organs are not actually damaged. I use Renshen to consolidate Yuan Qi, Xuanshen to clear fire, Jinyinhua to eliminate toxin, Chenpi to transform phlegm, and Jingjie to guide the meridians to expel the pathogen externally. Since vital energy exists internally, one dose restores vitality.
**Treatment of Measles:**
When measles first appear, the child invariably develops fever and experiences intense thirst, calling out for water. The appearance of the rash resembles a patch of red clouds, largely similar to macules (ban). However, macules lack granular heads, whereas rashes possess granular heads; the head resembles a flea bite, with no other distinctions. I now transmit a prescription for measles occurring in all four seasons: Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) 3 qian, Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) 2 qian, Suye (Perillae Folium) 1 qian, Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 0.5 qian, Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix) 1 qian, Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos) 3 qian, Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 0.3 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) 3 qian, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) 0.8 qian, Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) 2 qian. Use half a zhong of water, decoct to five fen, and take hot. This prescription is miraculously effective for all cases of measles.
In summer only, add Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) 3 qian. For infants a few months old, halve the dosage; for those over one week old, follow these dosages exactly. There is no need to transmit further prescriptions. One dose of my prescription cures the condition; why would it last until the third day?
