This is Xiongxin Decoction (Cnidium and Asarum Decoction) added with Glehniae Radix (Gaoben) and Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), in equal parts, ground into fine powder. For every four taels of the medicinal powder, add half a jin of calcined Gypsum Fibrosum (Guoshi). Form pills with water. Each tael of powder yields eight pills. Chew one pill after meals. It treats all wind syndromes in men and women, skin sores and tinea covering the whole body, stubborn numbness of hands and feet, lateral and frontal headaches, nasal congestion, mental fogginess, and head wind contracted during defecation due to Cold Damage. It also treats miasmic fog or fever, and wind-burrowing toothache. Use one pill divided into three applications for dry rubbing on the affected area, followed by rinsing with salt water, and then chewing with scallion tea.
This is Xiongxin Decoction added with Fuxiong (a variety of Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Chuanwu), and Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Baizhi), ground into fine powder. Take one qian each time, mixed with scallion white tea, rice water, or Mint Decoction (Bohe Tang). It treats stroke, fever and aversion to cold pain caused by Cold Damage, vertigo, nasal congestion, heavy voice, stiffness and tension of the shoulders and back, body soreness, muscle twitching, trismus, old and new head wind, and dim vision.
This is Xiongxin Decoction added with Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe), and Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), ground into powder, and formed into honey pills the size of a Chinese quince seed (Qianshi). Chew one pill finely after meals and before retiring, using rice water. It dissipates wind stagnation, transforms phlegm-fluids, clears the chest diaphragm, and brightens the head and eyes. It treats headache, vertigo, palpitations, irritability and heat, neck and nape stiffness, shoulder and back fatigue and tension, limb discomfort and pain, skin itching, mental dizziness, eye pain, nasal congestion with heavy voice, facial wind sensation resembling insect crawling.
Regulate the middle jiao, smooth qi, dispel wind-cold, transform phlegm-fluids. Treat chronic cold in the spleen and stomach, abdominal and hypochondriac distension and pain, phlegm retention in the chest and diaphragm, vomiting and nausea. Or external contraction of wind-cold combined with internal injury from raw/cold food, leading to fullness and obstruction, dizziness and pain of the head and eyes, stiffness of shoulders and back, lethargy of limbs, alternating chills and fever, loss of appetite. Also treat irregular blood and qi in women, heart and abdominal pinching pain, irregular menstruation, or amenorrhea.
Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang, remove roots and joints, six taels), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Rougui, remove rough bark), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Shaoyao, three taels each), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, honey-fried, three taels), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Cangzhu, soaked in rice wash water, twenty-four taels), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhike, remove pulp, stir-fried, six taels). All above herbs, except Rougui and Zhike which are separately ground into coarse powder, are together ground into coarse powder. Slowly stir-fry over low fire until the color changes, spread out to cool, then mix in the fine powders of Rougui and Zhike evenly. Take three qian each time.
According to Haicang's (Zhang Yuansu) discussion on Wuji (Five Accumulations): Mahuang, Guizhi, Shaoyao, Gancao constitute Mahuang-Guizhi Half-Decoction (a combination of Mahuang Tang and Guizhi Tang); Cangzhu, Gancao, Chenpi, Houpo constitute Pingwei San. [The text implies that Wujisan is composed of these formulas]. Regarding cold conditions, one begins to understand [the principle/effect].
