Lu Zu (Master Lu) selected several major cases of Yang syndromes to illustrate, as there are too many to list comprehensively. In erythema caused by cold damage, the body feels hot as if on fire, and the patient is thirsty and calls for water. The prescription consists of: Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) 5 qian, Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) 3 qian, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix) 3 qian, Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus) 2 qian, Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica) 2 qian. This formula's brilliance lies in Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) clearing floating fire and stomach heat; its moist nature ensures that although the eruption is fiery, it does not overstep boundaries, and slight moistening allows it to emerge properly. Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) cools the chest and diaphragm, Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) and Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) guide and disperse the fire, assisted by Mai Dong and Sheng Di Huang to clear lung heat, allowing the heat in the middle jiao to be completely eliminated through descending purification.
As for heatstroke, it is also a condition of blazing Yang fire pathogen. Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba) 5 qian, Shi Gao (Gypsi Fibrum) 5 qian, Mai Dong 5 qian, Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) 1 qian, Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 1 qian, Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) 1 qian, Fu Ling (Poria) 3 qian, Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) 1 qian, Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) 2 qian, Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) 2 qian, Chao Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 3 qian. One dose brings recovery. This formula works by using Qing Hao and Shi Gao to clear summerheat heat, Mai Dong and Ren Shen to tonify qi and generate fluids, Ban Xia and Chen Pi to resolve phlegm-dampness, Huang Lian to clear heat and dry dampness, Fu Ling and Ze Xie to promote urination and leach out dampness, and Shen Qu and Bai Zhu to strengthen the spleen and harmonize the stomach.
Zhenren Hua stated: "An exquisite discussion, inexhaustible in its variations. Although Yang syndromes are numerous, these two conditions are the most urgent. Immortal Lu specifically highlighted them, and I will add one more case regarding Yin-type injury from summerheat, which should be treated with simultaneous clearing and tonification."
Xingjun Mao Ri stated: "Not a single argument is not wondrous."
Regarding Kidney Water deficiency-cold combined with external cold contraction, or Kidney Water exhaustion causing night fever and daytime chills, if these are mistaken for Yang syndromes and treated as such, thirst and heat will intensify further, accompanied by cold feet. The prescription includes: Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) 5 qian, Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus) 3 qian, Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) 3 qian, Fu Ling 3 qian, Ze Xie 2 qian, Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) 2 qian, Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) 1 qian, Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) 1 qian. One dose reduces fever, two doses bring cure. This formula's brilliance lies in Shu Di Huang nourishing Kidney Yin, Shan Zhu Yu and Shan Yao tonifying Liver and Spleen, Fu Ling, Ze Xie, and Dan Pi draining turbidity and clearing heat, while Rou Gui and Fu Zi warm Kidney Yang and guide fire back to its source. This treats the root. If only Fu Zi and Rou Gui are used to dispel cold, it may indeed be effective, but after the pathogen is removed, Yin fluids will inevitably be depleted leading to severe thirst, or improper treatment may result in symptoms of collapse of Yang. Everyone should pay close attention to treating by supplementing fire within water and eliminating pathogens within water.
Zhenren Ge stated: "An absolutely brilliant discussion, revealing insights never before expressed in millennia. What more could I say to praise its profundity? However, there is another prescription for cases where previous symptoms indicate hyperactivity of fire due to Yin deficiency, which requires nourishing Yin and descending fire."
