Maori Xingjun said: This formula is identical to that selected by Lu Xian, and both are ingenious in intent.

Hua Zhenren selected a treatment for chills and fever that worsen at night. Such conditions must be intercepted before dawn. The formula uses: Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) 3 qian, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) 3 qian, Renshen (Ginseng Radix) 1 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 5 qian, Fuling (Poria) [inferred from context].

The brilliance of this formula lies in adding 1 qian of Chaihu among Renshen, Gancao, Danggui, and Baizhu. Since pathogenic factors cause disturbances during the day by exploiting the weakness of Zhengqi (healthy qi), the method employs tonifying Zhengqi.

Lu Zu said: Fever occurring during the day indicates the pathogen is in the Yang portion. Tonifying Yang Qi will cause the pathogen to defeat itself. The formula uses: Renshen (Ginseng Radix) 2 qian, Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 1 qian, Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) 5 qian, Fuling (Poria) [inferred], Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) [inferred], Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) [inferred], Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) [inferred].

The formula uses: Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) 3 qian, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) [inferred], Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) [inferred], Renshen (Ginseng Radix) [inferred], Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [inferred], Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) [inferred], Dazao (Jujubae Fructus) [inferred].
