[Musk]
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature. Primarily treats the expulsion of malignant qi; when its fragrance is abundant, foul and turbid qi are eliminated. It kills demonic spirits and entities, as fragrance can overcome pathogenic factors. For warm malaria (Warm Malaria), the fragrance disperses wind pathogens. For gu poison (Gu Poison), the fragrance kills parasites. For epilepsy (Epilepsy), the fragrance unblocks meridians and collaterals. It eliminates the "three worms" (Three Worms). Worms are generated from dampness and filth, thus Musk can also eliminate them. Long-term consumption expels pathogens and prevents nightmares or sleep paralysis (Nightmares/Sleep Paralysis). Sleep paralysis arises from the blockage of Heart Qi (Heart Qi); when fragrance flows freely, this affliction is avoided.
This herb acts through its aroma. The musk deer favors aromatic herbs; the essence of its fragrance condenses within its navel, making it the chief among all fragrant substances. Fragrance represents upright Qi (Upright Qi); when upright Qi is robust, it naturally expels pathogens and dispels filth.
[Calculus Bovis / Cow Stone]
Bitter in flavor, neutral in nature. Primarily treats fright-epilepsy (Fright-Epilepsy), unblocks the Heart to resolve phlegm. Treats alternating chills and fever, and mania caused by excessive heat, by clearing hot phlegm from the Heart organ. Expels pathogens and drives away demons. When Heart Qi is vigorous, pathogenic factors cannot take hold. Calculus Bovis forms when the vital essence of the ox fails to circulate throughout the body; it belongs to Earth, hence its yellow color. In treating phlegm-fluids, tonifying the Spleen is primary. Beef itself strengthens the Spleen and resolves phlegm, but Calculus Bovis acts even more rapidly. Furthermore, Calculus Bovis tends to accumulate below the heart region, allowing it to enter the Hand-Shaoyin (Pericardium) and Hand-Jueyin (Heart) channels to drive out pathogens, wash away fluid retention, and benefit vital essence.
[Deer Antler Glue]
Sweet in flavor, neutral in nature. Primarily treats internal injury from overwork and exhaustion, lower back pain, emaciation, and wasting—symptoms indicating deficiency-cold in bone joints. Tonifies the Middle Jiao and benefits Qi; nourishing Blood ensures sufficient Middle Qi. Treats amenorrhea due to blood stasis leading to infertility, alleviates pain, and calms the fetus. This demonstrates its efficacy in tonifying the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel/Blood Sea). Long-term consumption lightens the body and prolongs life. When essence is sufficient and blood is full, these effects are achieved. The vital essence of the deer resides entirely in its antlers, which connect at the base to the Du Mai (Governing Vessel). Since deer antlers are the largest among beasts, the deer's Du Mai must be most vigorous; thus, it can tonify the human Du Mai. The Du Mai governs all bone joints; since the Kidney governs bones, it also tonifies the Kidney. The interior of the antler is filled with blood; since the Chong Mai is the Sea of Blood, it also tonifies the Chong Mai. When the Chong Mai is robust and Kidney Qi is strong, all therapeutic effects are realized.
[Ejiao / Donkey-Hide Gelatin]
Sweet in flavor, neutral in nature. Primarily treats internal hemorrhaging in the chest and abdomen, and diseases involving blood loss and Qi depletion. Extreme fatigue accompanied by shivering like malaria occurs because labor and weariness injure the Spleen, causing blood deficiency; this disharmony of Liver and Spleen cold and heat manifests like malaria. Lower back and abdominal pain, along with soreness in the four limbs, indicate blood exhaustion. For women with uterine bleeding, it calms the fetus. Nourishing Blood stops bleeding and stabilizes the fetus. Long-term consumption lightens the body and benefits Qi. Nourishing Blood also replenishes Qi.
A-Jing well water is an underground subterranean flow of the Ji River. The source of the Ji River is the Huan River. From the Huan River to A-Jing well, the water appears and disappears intermittently. As described in the *Book of Xia*, where overflow becomes a river emerging north of Taoqiu, these are subterranean flows rising from below. A-Jing well is located 300 li north of Taoqiu. Although the spring flows, it does not surge upward, representing water within a hidden pulse pattern. Such waters are heavier than ordinary waters by one-tenth to two-tenths. Human blood vessels should remain hidden rather than exposed, deep rather than superficial. Using this water to make gelatin produces a premier drug for stopping bleeding and regulating menstruation. Donkey hide is used because donkey meat can stir Wind; the Liver is the organ of Wind and stores Blood, so the wind-moving property helps guide the medicine into the Liver channel. Additionally, all hide-based medicines tonify the Spleen; the Spleen is the root of postnatal Blood generation and controls blood containment, making Ejiao a supreme product among blood-tonifying drugs.
