[Sangshang Jisheng (Mulberry Mistletoe)]
Flavor and Nature: Bitter, Neutral, Non-toxic. Indicated for lower back pain, stiffness of the infant's back, and carbuncles and swellings. It can fill the skin and flesh, strengthen hair and teeth, promote the growth of beard and eyebrows, and calm the fetus.
Zhang Yin'an stated: Sangshang Jisheng absorbs the Qi of the mulberry tree to parasitize among the branches and nodes. It grows without a fixed season and does not rely on the power of the soil, thereby seizing the miraculous efficacy of Heaven and Earth's creation. Thus, it can nourish the Blood and vessels in places of emptiness, achieving effects twice as potent as other herbs. The reason it treats lower back pain is that the waist is the external manifestation of the Kidney; in men, the Kidney stores Essence, and in women, it anchors the uterus. Sangshang Jisheng obtains the refined Qi of the mulberry, growing by attachment to emptiness, hence its ability to treat lower back pain. Although infants' Kidneys are not fully formed and may seemingly lack symptoms of lower back pain, they may suffer from back stiffness and carbuncles/swellings. Since Sangshang Jisheng treats lower back pain, it can also treat back stiffness and carbuncles/swellings in infants. Filling the skin and flesh indicates that Jing-Qi reaches outward; strengthening hair and teeth indicates that Jing-Qi is sufficient inwardly. When Jing-Qi reaches outward to fill the skin and flesh, the beard and eyebrows will grow; when Jing-Qi is sufficient inwardly to strengthen teeth, the fetus will be calmed. Generally speaking, skin and flesh are the remnants of the dermis and muscle; teeth are the remnants of bones; hair, beard, and eyebrows are the remnants of Blood; the fetus is the remainder of the body. Using things that parasitize via "remnant Qi" to treat diseases of "remnant Qi," this is an example of mutual resonance between similar categories.
[Huaishi (Sophora Fruit)]
Flavor and Nature: Bitter, Cold. Indicated for pathogenic heat within the five Zang organs, stopping saliva and sputum, repairing severe injuries, treating the five types of hemorrhoids, and fire sores. It treats breast masses (Ru Jia) and acute pain in the uterus (Zi Zang) in women.
[Baishi (Biota Seed)]
Flavor and Nature: Sweet, Neutral. Indicated for calming palpitations and anxiety (clearing wandering Fire from the Heart Meridian), stabilizing the five Zang organs (due to its moistening effect), benefiting Qi (when robust Fire consumes Qi, calming the Fire allows Qi to benefit), dispelling wind-damp Bi syndrome (following the command of Autumn Metal, it can dry dampness and soothe the Liver). Long-term use makes the person lustrous and beautiful, keeps the ears and eyes free from hunger and aging, lightens the body, and prolongs life. (The nature of Biota is such that it can live long without irrigation.)
Xu Lingtai stated: Biota is born with the firm and rigid nature of Heaven and Earth, remaining unchanged amidst other things, becoming greener after winter. Therefore, it can calm the Spirit (Shen), consolidate Heart Qi, and prevent invasion by pathogenic winds and wandering Fire. The physiological function of humans is called Ren (Benevolence/Life Force), which resides in the Heart. The vitality of objects lies in their seeds/fruits; thus, seeds/fruits are also called Ren. All plant seeds/fruits can nourish Heart Qi, based on the principle of resonance between similar categories.
