[Juebai (Selaginella tamariscina)]
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature. Grows in mountain valleys. Treats pathogenic factors of the five Zang organs. Treats cold-heat pain in the female vagina, zheng jia (abdominal masses), blood obstruction amenorrhea, and infertility. Long-term consumption makes the body light and the complexion rosy and lustrous. Also known as Wansui (Ten Thousand Years). Grows among rocks in mountain valleys.
It sprouts in spring; artificial cultivation lacks basis. White stones are hard and bright; fragrant grasses grow lush and green. Like viewing a leopard through a tube, only seeing patches of spots; or like curled chicken feet resting there. Possessing the name of long life and ten thousand years, it ranks with cypress trees.
In the fu by Emperor Jianwen of Liang: "The grass holds spring and its color moves." In the *I Ching* (Book of Changes): "Sprouting according to the season." In the *Treatises of the Book of Tang*: "The official in charge of gardens manages the planting of orchards and parks." In the *Book of Documents*: "Do not listen to words without foundation." In the *Classic of Poetry*: "White stones are hard and bright." In the *Songs of Chu*: "Fragrant grass grows lush and green." In the *Book of Jin*: "Viewing a leopard through a tube, one sees patches of spots at times." Wu Pu said: Also known as Baozu (Leopard Foot). Su Song said: Sprouts emerge in spring, leaves resemble those of cypress but are finer, curled like chicken feet. Li Shizhen said: Commonly known as Changsheng Busi Cao (Long-Life Immortality Grass).
[Lanshi (Isatis tinctoria seed/fruit)]
Bitter in flavor, cold in nature. Treats dissolving various toxins. Kills gu poison (parasitic disease), zhu gui (diseases attributed to evil spirits), and stinging toxins. Long-term consumption prevents hair whitening and makes the body light. Grows in marshes and wetlands.
Harvested three times a year, full of fragrant nourishment, suitable for dyeing. Pods contain rich indigo blue; flower spikes hang low with pale red hues. Toxins melt like ice; gu poisons dissipate like fog. Black hair renews in spring; taken with Jiuzhuan Dan (Nine-Turn Elixir).
Li Shizhen said: It can be harvested three times a year. Flowers form spikes in May and June, small and pale red. The pods are about an inch long, resembling small bean pods. The *Classic of Poetry* says: "Not filling a dou (unit of measure)." Wang Jiyu's poem says: "Fragrant isatis nourishes the silk fabric." Emperor Jianwen of Liang's prose says: "Dyeing delights the music and song." The *Biographies of the Book of Tang* say: "Disintegrating like broken tiles, melting like ice." Wang Bo's preface says: "Group of doubts dissipates like fog." Wang Jian's poem says: "Black hair renews in spring." The *Records of Marvels Beyond the World* says: "Consume the Hejiuzhuan Dan (Harmonized Nine-Turn Elixir)."
[Xiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong)]
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature. Treats headache caused by wind-stroke invading the brain, cold-bi causing tendon spasm or flaccidity, metal wounds, female blood obstruction amenorrhea, and infertility. Grows in river valleys.
Sought among forest groves. Transverse texture clear as the Spring Equinox. Snake bed seeds' stamens shattered; sparrow-brain patterns diverse. Emerald holds clear dew; fragrance surrounds yellow clouds. Harmonizing soups and brewing tea, diligent in dispelling dampness.
Su Shi's poem says: "Seeking wild xiong seedlings among the forest groves." Li Shizhen said: After Qingming, perennial roots sprout new shoots; branches are separated and sliced transversely. Su Song said: In July and August, tiny white flowers bloom like snake bed seeds; roots are yellow-black, shaped like sparrow brains. Su Shi's poem says: "Lush green stems fill [the view], containing clear dew." Huang Tingjian's poem says: "A spike of yellow clouds surrounds the desk." Song Qi's eulogy says: "Can be sprinkled into soup." Han Qi's poem says: "Often picking tender shoots to cook and bestow for tea drinking."
