[Rui He (Prunus persica var. nucipersica seed / Peach Kernel)]
The taste is sweet and neutral, with a warm nature. It primarily treats evil qi in the heart and abdomen. It brightens the eyes and treats redness, pain, and tearing of the eyes. Long-term consumption lightens the body, tonifies Qi, and reduces hunger. It grows in mountain valleys.
The stems bear Rui (fruits hanging down), growing in clusters on strong thorns, hanging full like ear ornaments. Bright eyes are like looking into a mirror. Is it to drill through hard cores? Not to show respect by holding them. Produced in Hangu Pass and Baxi, green leaves spread like clouds, red fruits shine like stars.
Han Baosheng said: Rui seeds grow attached to the stem. Li Shizhen said: Flowers and fruits hang down as "Rui", hence the name. Guo Pu said: Grows in clusters with thorns, fruits are like ears. Purple and red, edible. The *Classic of Poetry* mentions "filling the ears with beautiful jade". The *Classic of Poetry* also says "Heaven gave double bright eyes". Wang Rong's preface cites "holding a mirror to brighten the eyes". *Book of Jin* biography records: Wang Rong had good plums at home and always drilled their cores. *Analects* says: "Drilling it makes it harder". *Book of Rites* says: "For those with cores, hold the core". *Zuo Zhuan* says: "Diligence in rites is best shown by respect". Famous physicians say: Grows in Hangu and Baxi. Wu Pu said: Harvested in August. Kong Zhiqi's memorial mentions: "Green leaves spread like clouds, red fruits shine like stars."
[Ju You (Citrus reticulata / Citrus maxima)]
The taste is pungent and neutral, with a warm nature. It primarily treats heat from masses (Jia) in the chest, rebellious Qi, and promotes the metabolism of water and grain. Long-term consumption removes bad breath, directs Qi downward, and connects with the spirit. Also known as Ju Pi (Tangerine Peel). It grows in mountain valleys.
Distinguishing small from large, preserving each other through the cold year. Pearls form within, fragrance lingers; Lei You fruits are large as dou, gathering frost-like hues. A chaste heart appears glorious, benevolent seeds are sweet and sour. Xuan Shu starlight scatters, overlooking Yunmeng.
Books and legends state: Small ones are called Ju, large ones You. *Analects* says: "The wise recognize the great, the unwise recognize the small." Bai Juyi's poem states: "Should be able to preserve through the cold year." Liu Kezhuang's poem states: "Pale moon, pearl womb shines brightly." Li Shizhen said: Ju [peel] is red inside and yellow outside, fragrant mist gathers, resembling clouds. *Guangzhou Ji* records: Lei You fruits are large as a dou. Fang Hui's poem states: "Full beard gathers frost and snow." Li Shen's poem states: "Does not change its chaste heart with cold or heat." Yu Xi's poem states: "Glorious and beautiful in the Central States." *Qunfang Pu* records: Ren Zai refers to the You category. Huang Tingjian's poem states: "Like eating Ju and You, knowing sweet and sour." *Chunqiu Yundou Shu* says: Xuan Shu starlight scatters into Ju. *Lüshi Chunqiu* says: Among delicious fruits, there is the You of Yunmeng.
