Method of Moxibustion on the Four Flowers Acupoints
First Pair (Two Acupoints):
First, instruct the patient to stand upright with the body straight. Take a thin string, impregnate it with wax, and ensure it does not stretch or shrink. Align one end of the string with the tip of the big toe of the left foot for males or the right foot for females. Wrap the string along the sole of the foot, secure it, lead it to the heel, and then go straight up the calf to the large transverse crease in the middle of the popliteal fossa (knee bend). Cut the string at this point. Instruct the patient to untie their hair and part it to both sides to expose the cranial suture line. Divide the line from the fontanelle (Baihui area) equally down to the back of the head. Then, have the patient sit upright. Press one end of the previously measured string against the tip of the nose. Lead the string upward, following the cranial suture line to the back of the head, hanging vertically against the flesh. Where the end of the string falls exactly on the midline of the vertebral column, mark the spot with ink. For women who bind their feet, the natural physiological proportions are altered; measuring by foot would definitely result in insufficient length. Instead, mark the Jianjing (GB21) acupoint on the right shoulder. Place one end of the string on this acupoint, extend the arm, and lead the string downward to the tip of the middle finger. Cut the string here; this defines the acupoint. This method applies to males as well.
Next, instruct the patient to close their mouth. Take one end of a short wax string and press it at the left corner of the mouth. Lift the string upward to the root of the nose, then diagonally downward to the right corner of the mouth to form a triangle. Cut the string flush with the corners of the mouth. Unfold this string, straighten it, and fold it in half to find the midpoint. Mark the midpoint with ink. Place the center ink mark of this string directly over the previous ink mark on the vertebral column. Ensure both ends of the string are level, neither high nor low. Mark the two ends of the string with ink circles. These are the first two acupoints.
This concludes the marking of the first pair of acupoints.
Second Pair (Two Acupoints):
Instruct the patient to sit upright with the body straight, slightly retracting the arms. Take a wax string and wrap it around the neck, hanging from above the Dazhui (GV14) vertebra. Let it hang forward in two strands, aligning with the tip of Jiawei (the cartilage below the sternum, also known as Xinbigu). Note: Xinbigu refers to the xiphoid process. If the xiphoid process is absent, measure one cun downward from the bifurcation of the sternum; this location corresponds to Jiawei. Cut the string at this level. Turn the string ends toward the back of the neck. Press the string against the laryngeal prominence (Adam's apple), allowing the double strands to hang along the neck and follow the vertebral column upward. Where the ends of the string fall exactly on the midline of the vertebral column, mark the spot with ink.
Next, instruct the patient to close their mouth. Measure horizontally across the mouth with a short wax string, forming a horizontal line ("一" shape). Cut the string flush with the two corners of the mouth (Kouwei). Fold it in half to find the midpoint, similar to the previous method. At the ink mark on the vertebral column, measure horizontally using this string as per the previous method. Mark the two ends of the string with ink circles. These are the two horizontal acupoints of the "Four Flowers Acupoints."
This concludes the second set of acupoint markings, totaling four acupoints so far. Apply moxibustion simultaneously to these four points, 7 to 14 moxa cones (zhuang) per point. It is optimal to moxibustiate up to 120 or 150 moxa cones. Wait until the moxa blisters (fire sores) appear, then proceed to moxibustiate the next two acupoints according to the subsequent method.
Third Pair (Two Acupoints):
Take the short string used previously to measure the mouth width. At the ink mark on the vertebral column where the double string ends fell during the second measurement, place the midpoint ink mark of this short string onto the vertebral ink mark. Align it vertically, ensuring it is perfectly centered. The string should be balanced top and bottom. Mark the ends of the string with ink circles. These are the two vertical acupoints of the "Four Flowers Acupoints."
This concludes the third set of acupoint markings, collectively known as the "Four Flowers Acupoints." Moxibustiate each of these two acupoints with 100 moxa cones. In total, six acupoints are treated across three sessions. Perform moxibustion on a "Fire Day" (according to the Chinese calendar). Use mugwort collected on the third day of the third lunar month for best results. During the hundred days following treatment, strictly regulate diet and sexual activity, and rest peacefully in a quiet environment. If symptoms persist after one month, re-moxibustiate the original acupoints.
