Whenever a woman is near term and experiences lower back and abdominal pain, one should not immediately administer talismanic drugs for induction of labor, nor should she get into the birthing position immediately. She should frequently walk and stand, avoiding panic and haste. If indeed the time has come, verified prescriptions follow below:
To treat various conditions during pregnancy. This medicine can both stabilize the fetus and induce labor. It stabilizes the fetus and regulates Qi, with miraculous efficacy that is difficult to describe in full.
*Perillae Folium* (Zi Su Ye) (1 liang, roasted over fire) *Arecae Pericarpium* (Da Fu Pi) (washed, dried, stir-fried with fresh ginger juice) *Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma* (Ren Shen) (0.5 liang) *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium* (Chen Pi) (0.5 liang, pith removed). The above herbs are coarsely crushed. For each dose, take 3 qian, add 3 slices of fresh ginger and 3 cun of scallion white, decoct in water, and take on an empty stomach. During the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy, it is advisable to add 0.5 liang of *Aurantii Fructus Immaturus* (Zhi Ke), along with a few drops of rice juice. Additionally, take a piece of *Boswelliae Carthartici Resina* (Ru Xiang) the size of a little finger, grind it thickly in water to make 1 he, shake well, and take warm. Wait until the waters break before administering labor-inducing medicines.
Labor Induction Prescription: Take a handful of fresh branches from *Quercus variabilis* (Za Sheng Zhi), one chi long, clean them thoroughly, add 5 cun of *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma* (Gan Cao), chop them finely, add seven zhan of water, seal tightly with paper inside a clay pot, [text missing, implying boiling process]. This has been repeatedly effective for retained dead fetuses causing putrefaction and distension that have not been delivered after several days.
Another prescription: Equal parts of *Fulis Carbonisatus* (Bai Cao Shuang) and *Angelicae Dahuricae Radix* (Bai Zhi), ground into powder. Mix with urine from an uncircumcised boy and a small amount of vinegar to form a paste. Take mixed with hot water.
Yet another prescription: Wood shavings from the head of a wooden mallet where the axe strikes, burn to ash but retain medicinal properties, grind into powder, and take mixed with fast-flowing water.
For difficult labor where the fetus presses against the heart and does not descend: Burn snake skin to ash, mix with a small amount of *Moschus* (She Xiang), grind finely, and take mixed with warm wine. Labor will proceed immediately.
Retained placenta: Use three egg whites from high-quality eggs, discard the yolks, mix with 1 he of sour vinegar, drink it down, and the placenta will be expelled.
One method: Have the parturient hold the end of her own hair in her mouth to induce retching; the placenta will then be expelled.
Another prescription: Grind 14 seeds of *Ricini Semen* (Bi Ma Zi) after removing the shells, apply to the soles of both feet. The placenta will be expelled; wash off afterwards. If not washed off, the rectum may prolapse. At this moment, applying this medicine to the Baihui acupoint (Ding Xin) on the vertex can retract the prolapsed rectum. Using this medicine extensively is harmless. Once the rectum is retracted, wash off the medicine. The effect is miraculous.
Postpartum blood stasis rushing upward causing syncope due to blood loss, which can be fatal within moments: Decoct aged *Artemisiae Argyi Folium* (Chen Ai) in water, add wax, and take orally.
Metrorrhagia in women: Grind *Scutellariae Radix* (Huang Qin) into powder. Each dose is 2 qian. First, place a red iron scale weight into wine, wait for it to boil and settle, then take the mixture mixed with wine.
Another prescription: Burn dry lotus seedpods to ash but retain medicinal properties, take mixed with wine, 2 qian per dose, which is excellent.
Yet another prescription: High-quality cotton palm fiber and human hair, burn together to ash but retain medicinal properties, mix with *Fulis Carbonisatus* (Bai Cao Shuang), grind into powder, and take mixed with pure wine (without impurities).
