Ten types of critical conditions arise suddenly like wind and rain; therefore, famous prescriptions are selected to rescue the patients.
First critical condition: Cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, caused by drinking cold water, exposure to cold, irregular eating habits (hunger or overeating), extreme anger, or physical shock from riding in carriages or boats damaging stomach Qi. This leads to incessant vomiting and diarrhea, dizziness, blurred vision, convulsions of the hands and feet, and cold extremities. Prescription:
Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸) half tael, Chaenomelis Fructus (Mugua, 木瓜) half tael, Sal (Yan, 食盐) half tael.
Stir-fry the three ingredients together until scorched. First, boil three sheng of water in a clay pot, then add the herbs and decoct until less than two sheng remain. Take orally.
Another method: Use calcined alum (Ku Bai Fan, 枯白矾) ground into powder. Take one large qian per dose, mixed with boiling water.
Another prescription: Take a pinch of salt and one zhan of vinegar, decoct until reduced to seventy percent, and take warm. Alternatively, use salted plums or other salty-sour substances, decocted and taken orally.
Second critical condition: Throat-binding wind (Chan Hou Feng, 缠喉风), characterized by throat obstruction, swelling, pain, cold extremities, and sudden respiratory failure. Use three pieces of Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Zao Jiao, 皂角), soak in water to obtain one zhan of juice, and administer via gavage for immediate recovery.
Another method: One piece of Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus (Zao Jiao, 皂角) and one qian of Carbonis Herba (Baicao Shuang, 百草霜), ground together into powder. Mix with cold water, add a few drops of sesame oil, and administer via gavage.
Another method: Decoct four liang of Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 升麻) chopped, using four bowls of water, reduce to one bowl, and administer via gavage for recovery.
Third critical condition: Hematemesis and internal injury, caused by excessive alcohol and sexual activity damaging the heart and lungs, leading to erratic blood flow exiting from the mouth and nose. Use one handful of Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie, 荆芥), burn to ash, place on the ground to eliminate fire toxicity, and grind finely. Take three qian per dose, mixed with aged rice water.
Another method: Grind Carbonis Herba (Baicao Shuang, 百草霜) finely. Take three qian per dose, mixed with thick rice water. Three doses are effective.
Fourth critical condition: Poisoning from sand/minerals, characterized by restlessness, severe abdominal pain, dizziness with urge to vomit but unable to do so, cyanotic and black complexion, and cold extremities. Use one handful of Qing Lan (Qinglan, 青蓝 - a specific herbal antidote, often associated with indigo or similar detoxifying plants), grind finely. Mix with well water (Jing Hua Shui, 井花水) and administer one bowl via gavage.
Another method: Administer two sheng of Sesame Oil (Mahu You, 麻油) via gavage.

Seventh critical condition: Yang collapse (Tuo Yang, 脱阳), acute lower abdominal pain, retraction of testes, blackened face, panting, and spontaneous cold sweating. Use three stalks of Scallion White with roots (Lian Xu Cong Bai, 连须葱白), mash in a mortar, decoct in five sheng of wine to obtain two sheng. Divide into two doses. Additionally, apply hot stir-fried salt to warm the Qihai (CV6) point below the navel; keep the area warm.

Tenth critical condition: Retained placenta (Tai Yi Bu Xia, 胎衣不下), evil blood rushing to the heart causing confusion, placenta reversing upward. Use one sheng of Adzuki Beans (Chi Xiao Dou, 赤小豆), stir-fried, decoct in three sheng of water to obtain two sheng. Remove beans, take the juice warm, and the placenta will be expelled immediately.
Another method: Burn the fingernails and toenails of the woman herself to ash, mix with wine, and take one dose. Then, have a strong woman lift the patient and press a bamboo tube against the heart/chest area to push downwards.
