When this eye disease first occurs, the patient experiences dizziness (Tou Xuan), pain in the lateral forehead, pain in the eyelids and orbital bones, redness and dryness inside the eyes. There may be visual disturbances appearing as white, black, or red spots, all caused by heat accumulation in the Liver (Gan) and wind-labor affecting the Lung (Fei). Alternatively, there may be mental restlessness, hematemesis (Ou Xue), constipation of the Large Intestine (Da Chang), and seeing lights at night like flying bees. At the initial stage of the disease, it is appropriate to treat with acupuncture on various acupoints and meridians. One must avoid excessive bleeding from the Du Meridian (Du Mai), lest it worsen dimness of vision. It is suitable to take Huanjing Wan (Restore Vision Pill).
Poem:
Ice cataract is hard like refined water,
Yin within Yang is uniform.
Looking aside, the pupil shows white transparency,
The needle's clarity is no lie.
Moving the needle up and down three to five times,
With sincere medication, recovery is certain.
If a mediocre doctor forces the manipulation,
The clear pupil will lose its vision.
Huanjing Wan (Restore Vision Pill)
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chongweizi (Chervil Seed), Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (each 2 liang); Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (1 liang each below); Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) (2.5 liang), Heishen (Polygonati Rhizoma Nigrum) (0.5 liang).
Crush and sieve these into powder, mix with refined honey to make pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take ten pills orally on an empty stomach with tea.
When this eye disease first occurs, there is neither itching nor pain. It starts in one eye, then spreads to affect both. Initially appearing normal, vision gradually dims until blindness. This is caused by brain fat flowing downward and Liver Qi rushing upward. Inside the pupil, there is a cataract resembling a mercury bead, making it impossible to distinguish people. It is suitable to use a gold needle for phacodonesis (dialysis of the lens). After treatment, pay attention to recuperation, and take Bogan Tang (Tonify Liver Decoction) and Shijueming Wan (Arcoconcha Pill) for recovery.
Poem:
Focus your mind when observing the slippery cataract,
Slightly yellow with white swirling.
Opening wide then shrinking quickly,
Like a mercury bead spinning.
Although the needle manipulation drops it easily,
Retracting the needle makes it return to its source.
Retract the needle to break through the green turbidity,
Like the golden crow shining in the sky in May.
Bogan Tang (Tonify Liver Decoction)

Crush and sieve these into powder. Take one qian of the powder with one sheng of water, decoct until half remains. Strain and take warm after meals.
