The ear is the orifice of the Kidney. Ear diseases all belong to the Kidney. Due to Kidney deficiency, there may be sounds in the ear like tides or cicadas. Or sudden deafness with no hearing. It is suitable to use Minglong San (Minglong Powder). Or chew beeswax and swallow it with wine. Also consume Huangla Zhou (Yellow Beeswax Porridge).
If the Kidney channel has been deficient for a long time, and there are continuous tidal or cicada-like sounds in the ears, hindering hearing, one should take Zhuqi Bushen Zhengyuan Yin (Qi-Descending Kidney-Nourishing Prime Origin Decoction). Swallow Heixi Dan (Black Tin Pill). Intermittently administer Anshen Wan (Kidney-Anchoring Pill).
Wind-toxin attacking the ear, causing pus formation, is named Ting'er (Stagnant Ear). First, use a cotton swab to extract the pus until clean. Then blow Taohua San (Peach Blossom Powder) into the ear. Alternatively, take aged Chenpi (Dried Tangerine Peel), remove the white pith, burn it over a hemp oil lamp until the carbon remains but the nature is preserved, grind it into powder, add a small amount of Shexiang (Musk), and mix with Taohua San. According to the method, Gan Yanzhi (Dry Carmine) and Baifan (Alum) can also be added.
Jiu Bi (Wine Nose): The nose belongs to Wind of the Lung. There are cases where it arises spontaneously without alcohol consumption, not entirely caused by drinking. This is actually the common name for Jiu Zao Bi (Rose Acne). It is suitable to use Zhe'ergan (Fermented Rice Wash Water) as a single herb. Take after meals with chilled beverage.
Externally, apply Sulfur ground inside a Da Caitou (Turnip/Rutabaga) onto the affected area. If the nasal tip is slightly red and heat-induced sores grow in the nose, grind Xinyi (Magnolia Flower) into powder, add a little Naobing (Borneol) and Shexiang (Musk), wrap in cotton, and insert into the nose. Or take Pipaye (Loquat Leaf), wipe off the hairs, do not need honey-frying, chop finely, decoct into a thick soup, let cool, then mix with Xiaofeng San (Wind-Dispersing Powder). Administer after meals and before bed.
Nasal congestion with unceasing discharge differs between cold and heat syndromes. Clear discharge is caused by cold brain and cold lungs. Suitable herbs include Xixin (Asarum), Wufu (Aconite), and Ganjiang (Dried Ginger). Turbid discharge is what Suwen refers to as Gallbladder Heat transferring to the brain, causing irritability and Biyuan (Nasal Sinusitis). Suitable herbs include Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia) and Ganju (Chrysanthemum). One must distinguish cold from heat by clarity versus turbidity.
One prescription uses Can'erzi (Xanthium Fruit), which is the seed of Jiansicao, stir-fried and ground into fine powder. Take after meals. Immediate effect.
There are cases of excessive discharge not due to cold injury, where discharge is yellow or white, sometimes bloody, resembling brain marrow. This is generated by Kidney deficiency. Do not overuse cooling agents. It is suitable to use Nao Bu San (Brain-Nourishing Powder). Still combine with Heixi Dan (Black Tin Pill), Ziling Dan (Purple Spirit Pill), and Lingsha Dan (Cinnabar Sand Pill).
Injury from cold and heat, sudden nasal blockage, and excessive discharge: use Tongguan San (Pass-the-Passage Powder).
Bi Xu (Epistaxis). See Epistaxis Syndrome in the Blood Gate section.
Where the rest of the body is healthy, but only the nasal tip is cyan-yellow, this person likely suffers from Lin Syndrome (Strangury). If the nasal tip is slightly white, it indicates blood loss. If red, it indicates blood heat.
Externally, there are Bi Zhi (Nasal Polyps). Differentiating ailments cannot be fully enumerated in surgical formulas.
