The term "Chun Nu" (Lip Epistaxis) is not recorded in medical books, yet I have witnessed it personally. The nature of the syndrome and its treatment are so peculiar that their rationale is unfathomable. In the autumn of the Renzi year of the Qianlong era, a merchant sought consultation. He reported that a sore had occasionally appeared on his upper lip; after being scratched, it bled incessantly, sometimes shooting out like an arrow, for ten days. He requested hemostatic medication. According to TCM theory, the lips belong to the Spleen (Spleen), indicating that this condition must be caused by Spleen Heat steaming upward, hence the unceasing bleeding. Initially, cooling and clearing agents were used but proved ineffective. Due to excessive blood loss, fearing Yin injury, nourishing fluids and nourishing Yin formulas were administered, also without effect. Subsequently, various external hemostatic medicines for traumatic wounds were applied, still without success. After dragging on for over a month, with immeasurable blood loss, his physical form and spirit became emaciated and exhausted, and he resigned himself to death. Suddenly, he dreamed of his deceased ancestors who said: "Your illness cannot be cured by medicine. You may use one chestnut, burned to ash with its shell, mixed in equal parts with Sulfur (Liu Huang), ground into powder, and applied externally; it will heal itself." Upon waking, he applied the remedy as instructed, and the bleeding indeed stopped. The merchant told me personally, "This is truly a surprising and strange matter."

Madam Wang suffered from Chi Nu (Gingival Bleeding) in the early summer month. After the bleeding stopped, she vomited blood; after that stopped, her nose began to bleed again. She experienced heavy flow for three days, and various treatments failed. Her pulse was wiry and forceful, indicating Excess Fire in the Lung and Stomach, which could only be subdued by cold-natured drugs. Thus, Xijiao Dihuang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) was prescribed, using juice extracted from fresh Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), mixed with Tongbian (Child's Urine) to wash down the herbs. Externally, feet were washed with hot wine, and a single garlic clove was mashed and applied to the Yongquan acupoint (Yongquan, Kidney 1, located in the depression anterior to the plantar crease between the second and third metatarsal bones when the foot is flexed). However, after a full day and night, the epistaxis continued unabated. I then recalled my disciple Mr. Xu mentioning a legendary method for stopping epistaxis: take several chi of coarse guqin strings, tie a hundred copper coins to each end, hang them around the neck, and then press firmly on the Taixi acupoint (Taixi, Kidney 3, located in the depression distal to the medial malleolus where the posterior tibial artery pulses). This method is highly effective. Since external treatments do not harm the body, and all internal treatments had failed, we tentatively tried this method, and the epistaxis surprisingly ceased. However, due to excessive blood loss, her true Yin was inevitably damaged, resulting in mental and physical fatigue, dizziness, and insomnia. Therefore, the prescription was changed to Maidong Dihuang Tang (Ophiopogon and Rehmannia Decoction - *Note: Text says 'Mai Yi', likely referring to Ophiopogon/Rehmannia based context*) supplemented with Guiban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Nvzhenzi (Ligustri Lucidi Fructus), Shashen (Glehniae Radix), and Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla). Within ten days, she recovered completely. This case is recorded to broaden knowledge.

I once heard senior physicians say that Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) is a sacred medicine for stabilizing pregnancy, though I did not initially believe it. In the autumn of the Guichou year of the Qianlong era, a woman who had been pregnant for several months complained of pain in both her waist and abdomen, with excessive lochia discharge, threatening miscarriage. Various medications failed, but upon administering this formula with added Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin), the condition stabilized. It was later found to be effective in repeated uses. This formula contains Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) to tonify Qi and Blood. Its brilliance lies in the ascending power of Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), which prevent the descent of the fetal origin, allowing the tonifying herbs to take effect. If there is Blood Heat, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) is added; if there is Blood Deficiency, Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) is added, which is particularly efficacious.
