Brother Liu Wenying had a deficient constitution and contracted pathogenic factors, complicated by internal injury. The illness began with chills, fever, and cold extremities (Zhi Jue). His pulse was deep and fine (Chen Xi). Initially, Danggui Sini Tang (Angelica Decoction for Cold Extremities) was administered. Although the cold extremities resolved, the body heat persisted. Upon careful examination, it was determined to be a deficiency in the lower jiao (Lower Burner), with pathogens sinking into the body due to deficiency. Consequently, Liyin Jian (Yin-Regulating Decoction) was advanced for two doses. At the follow-up visit, the pulse became floating and large (Fu Da), the tongue coating was black, and the face was red; the patient’s vital energy was faint and on the verge of collapse. As the scholar was poor and could not afford Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Codonopsis Radix (Dangshen) and Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudi), each four liang, were boiled into a concentrated decoction. This was given intermittently between sips of rice gruel and porridge throughout the day and night. Mental clarity slightly returned, and the pulse became somewhat contained, yet he still felt irritability and internal heat. The tongue was dry with depleted fluids. It was instructed to prepare softshell turtle soup to assist in administering the herbal medicine. Various symptoms gradually subsided, but the condition later transformed into malaria (Nüe). The episodes were severe; after various treatments, recovery took one hundred days.
Years later, due to summerheat injury in summer, malaria occurred in autumn. Pathogens were latent in the yin level, presenting with chills and fever at night. I used Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) and Shenxiang Hong Yin for several doses, but the condition did not cease. Seeking rapid cure, the patient indiscriminately took various antimalarial formulas, causing severe damage to qi and blood. The complexion was cyanotic, the form was fatigued, and sleep and appetite were abolished. Occasional red light was seen in the eyes, and urination was dribbling. He invited me again for treatment. All standard antimalarial prescriptions were discarded. Mimicking the Ming dynasty physician’s method for treating chronic malaria that does not resolve, Yangying Tang (Nourish Ying Decoction) was used to deliver Jiwei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill, i.e., Jin Gui Shenqi Wan). After ten doses, the malaria ceased.
Madam, wife of Brother Xiuwen, had suffered from a weak condition last winter and liver wind (Gan Feng) this spring, both of which I cured. Subsequently, she presented with a peculiar syndrome: vomiting clear saliva, amounting to several bowls per day. The *Daoist Canon* states: "Tears, spittle, essence, fluid, sweat, blood, and mucus—these seven spiritual substances all belong to yin." Saliva is also a type of fluid; prolonged vomiting must injure true yin. However, despite hundreds of attempts to treat it, the vomiting did not stop. I said to his wife: "In ancient times, there was a method of swallowing 'true water from the Hua Chi' (saliva). What if you swallow it instead of vomiting?" The wife replied: "If forced to swallow, I feel dizzy and nauseous." Palpation of the Shaoyin Heart channel pulse showed slight movement. Menstruation was asked about; it had been absent for two months. I informed Brother Xiuwen: "The pulse image suggests pregnancy. I do not ask if your wife had this symptom during previous pregnancies." He answered: "My wife previously vomited when pregnant, but she vomited food. This current syndrome is completely different. Moreover, her old illness has left her constitution weak and unrecovered; how could she conceive?" I said: "Based on the pulse, it is highly likely pregnancy. Otherwise, such a peculiar syndrome would be impossible. Regardless of whether she is pregnant, we will focus on nourishing the liver and kidney, while benefiting the spleen and stomach, and await further developments." After entering summer, fetal movement was felt in the abdomen, and the pregnancy shape gradually appeared. She was invited for another consultation. Brother Xiuwen smiled and said: "My wife has been pregnant multiple times. But she continues to vomit saliva as before. What should we do?" I said: "It is harmless; it will stop naturally after delivery." Indeed, after childbirth, the salivation stopped. From spring to winter, within ten months, an immeasurable amount of saliva was vomited, yet the body fluids were not damaged. Furthermore, the various treatments during pregnancy were ineffective, while no treatment after delivery led to spontaneous recovery. This is indeed a strange occurrence.
