For constipation with a deep and solid pulse, it indicates fire in the interior; purgation is indicated. For constipation with a choppy pulse, it belongs to blood deficiency; nourishing blood is indicated. For constipation with a floating pulse, it belongs to qi deficiency; tonifying qi is indicated. For constipation with a floating and choppy pulse, it indicates both qi and blood deficiency; tonifying both qi and blood is indicated.
A man suffered from an abscess. Before suppuration, he experienced pain, restlessness, constipation, and a solid pulse. After two doses of Neishu Huanglian Tang (Internal Purging Coptis Decoction), all symptoms subsided. Subsequently, after four doses of Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) added with Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), the swelling resolved.
After ulceration, a man presented with difficult defecation, a floating pulse that became choppy upon pressure. He was treated with Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) added with Honghua (Carthami Flos), Taoren (Persicae Semen), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), and Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), resulting in recovery.
After ulceration, a woman presented with constipation and a choppy pulse. She was treated with Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) added with Honghua (Carthami Flos) and Taoren (Persicae Semen), along with Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), resulting in recovery.
After ulceration, a man presented with constipation and a floating pulse. He was treated with Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), resulting in recovery.
An elderly man, after ulceration, had severe constipation and dark, difficult urination. His pulse was floating, rapid, and choppy. He was treated with Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) added with Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), leading to immediate recovery. This was because yang fire was exuberant, so the previous prescription was effective. Had bitter-cold herbs been used initially, it would certainly have caused mismanagement.
After ulceration, a man had difficult defecation and itching skin. I considered this due to qi and blood deficiency failing to nourish the couli (interstices). I used tonic formulas for treatment, but he did not believe them and instead took wind-dispelling drugs as the main treatment. Prescribing wind-dispelling drugs recklessly brings disaster instantly.

For swelling and pain caused by violent anger or breath blown by infants, soothe the liver and regulate qi. For attacks accompanied by chills and fever, disperse exterior pathogens. For severe swelling and pain, clear the liver and eliminate carbuncles. If pus has not formed, soothe the liver and regulate qi. If pus does not form or does not ulcerate, focus on supporting the interior to expel toxins. If ulcerated but not healing, or if pus is thin, greatly tonify qi and blood.
A woman with a robust constitution but irritable temperament, suffering from long-term emotional depression, had a nodule in her left breast that did not resolve, with slight pain on pressure. After more than twenty doses of Liaoqiao Yinzi (Forsythia Drink), it slightly receded. Then, after more than twenty doses of Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) added with Qingpi (Tangerine Peel Unripe), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), and Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), it resolved.
A woman, due to anger, had bilateral breast swelling accompanied by headache, chills, and fever. After two doses of Renshen Baidu San (Ginseng Detoxification Powder), the exterior symptoms subsided. Then, after four doses of Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with Chuanxiong (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), and Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), it resolved.
A woman with long-standing depression had swelling and hardness in her right breast. She was treated with Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) added with Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Qingpi (Tangerine Peel Unripe), combined with garlic-partitioned moxibustion, and concurrently administered Shenxiao Gualou San (Miraculous Efficacy Trichosanthes Powder). It resolved after more than two months.
A woman had a peach-sized swelling in her left breast that did not hurt for a long time, with unchanged skin color, fever, and gradual emaciation. She was treated with Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) added with Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Qingpi (Tangerine Peel Unripe), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix)... [Text fragment]. Conditions where meridians and excess/deficiency are not distinguished are difficult to treat. Generally, this condition is particularly difficult to treat in those over forty, due to the daily decline of yin blood.
A woman, due to anger, had painful swelling and fever in her left breast. Due to excessive dispersing, the heat intensified. After several doses of Yiqi Yangrong Tang (Tonify Qi and Nourish Spirit Decoction), the heat stopped and pus formed. [Text fragment regarding needling].
The Stomach Meridian [connects to the breast]; the nipple belongs to the Liver Meridian of Foot-Jueyin. If anger injures the liver, or rich flavors accumulate heat, causing qi stagnation and blockage of orifices, preventing milk flow, condensation occurs leading to swelling and pain. Excessive heat in the blood of the Yangming Meridian causes flesh to rot into pus. Once pus forms, it should be punctured immediately to avoid the risk of widespread ulceration of all locules. Also, when nursing an infant, if there is stagnant phlegm in the diaphragm and the infant's breath is hot, sleeping while holding the nipple allows hot air to blow in, causing swelling and pain. At the onset, one must suckle to unblock, or endure pain and massage to dissipate. Failure to treat properly will inevitably lead to a carbuncle. Use Qingpi (Tangerine Peel Unripe) to soothe Jueyin stagnation, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) to clear Yangming heat, Gancao Jie (Licorice Knot) to move turbid blood, assisted by Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus); further combine with garlic-partitioned moxibustion for especially swift effects. If pus exists, puncture it; otherwise, it will ulcerate widely and be hard to heal.
A woman with long-standing depression had three nodules in her right breast that did not resolve for over a year, with morning chills and evening fevers, and poor appetite. This is Ru Yan (Breast Rock/Cancer). It is injured by seven emotions... [Text fragment], moxibustion with cake... Fortunately, she was careful with her illness, and it resolved after over a year.
Another woman suffered from this. I advised taking many doses of herbs to resolve depression and tonify qi and blood to ensure safety. She did not believe me and instead took attacking/depleting herbs. Her breast enlarged like an inverted bowl, discharging clear pus daily, failing to heal, and she died.
A woman with long-standing depression had breast nodules that did not resolve for over a year, with slight afternoon fever and poor appetite. She was treated with Yiqi Yangrong Tang (Tonify Qi and Nourish Spirit Decoction). She thought it too slow... [Text fragment], and died.
Another relative, a released palace maid, had a millet-sized nodule in her breast. She also refused the previous decoction and instead took Liqi Yin (Qi-Regulating Drink) and Baidu San (Detoxification Powder) from surgical texts. Three days... [Text fragment].
Pain without itching is often ignored by people and is very difficult to treat. If such symptoms appear, one must guard against emotional disturbances, avoid rich flavors, resolve depression, and treat with qi-regulating herbs to preserve life; otherwise, it is untreatable. Some cases last two or three years, or five or six years. Any condition sinking downward is called Ru Yan (Breast Rock), as its shape protrudes like a rock cave. It is most toxic. Be extremely cautious!
A woman had fever and thirst, worse at night, with sudden bilateral breast swelling. After taking detoxifying herbs, the heat intensified. Her Liver pulse was flooding and rapid, indicating hot blood entering the uterus/blood chamber. She was treated with Jiawei Xiaochaihu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction), resulting in cessation of heat and resolution of swelling.
A woman, due to anger, had pain in her left breast and chest/diaphragm discomfort. She was treated with Fangmai Liuqi Yin (Formula Pulse Qi-Regulating Drink) added with Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) and Qingpi (Tangerine Peel Unripe), recovering after four doses.
A woman with long-standing depression had an apricot-sized nodule in her left breast that did not resolve for three months. Her Heart pulse was choppy, and her Spleen pulse was large but weak upon pressure. She was treated with Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) added with Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Qingpi (Tangerine Peel Unripe), and Jiegeng (Platycodon Root). It ulcerated after more than fifty doses and healed after another thirty-plus doses.
A woman had formed pus but did not ulcerate, experiencing swelling and pain. I wanted to puncture it to prevent toxin spread. She refused. A few days later, pain became extreme, and only then was it punctured, draining foul pus... [Text fragment]. Otherwise, it would have ulcerated all locules. Young and strong patients can heal; old and weak patients often fail to recover.
A woman had swelling without pus formation. She was treated with Yiqi Yangrong Tang (Tonify Qi and Nourish Spirit Decoction) added with Xiangfu (Cyperus Rhizome) and Qingpi (Tangerine Peel Unripe). Pus formed after several doses, and she healed ten days after puncturing.
A woman had right breast swelling, fever, lethargy, desire to sleep, lack of energy, and worsening heat at night. She was treated with Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Center-Supplementing Qi-Boosting Decoction) combined with Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), resulting in recovery.
A woman had frequent pain in both breasts, a spicy taste in the mouth, urgency when lying down or rising, and pulling pain below the umbilicus. She was treated with Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with Qingpi (Tangerine Peel Unripe), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), resulting in recovery.
A postpartum woman, due to low milk supply, took medication to promote lactation, leading to breast swelling, fever, and thirst resembling Taiyang syndrome. She was treated with Yulu San (Jade Dew Powder) to tonify, resulting in recovery. Milk is derived from qi and blood... [Text fragment]. Infants nursed are also weak and prone to illness; this is natural law. Some women have milk after multiple births but none after subsequent ones, or have dry stools, due to loss of body fluids. *San Yin Lun* states: There are two reasons for failure of milk flow in postpartum women: one is abundant qi and blood, causing closure and obstruction; the other is weak qi and blood, causing sluggishness and obstruction. Deficiency should be tonified; abundance should be regulated. For abundance, use Tongcao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Loulu (Radix Leptanthemi), Tugua Gen (Radix Citrulli Lanati), etc.; for deficiency, use refined Zhongru Fen (Calcar Ostrei Pulvis), pig trotters, crucian carp, etc. This is evident. Other symptoms like excessive milk discharge are seen in *Waike Xinfa*.
A man had severe swelling, hardness, and pain in his left breast. After two doses of Xianfang Huoming Yin (Immortal Formula Life-Saving Drink), it stopped. Then, after four doses of Shixuan San (Ten Acupoints Powder) added with Qingpi (Tangerine Peel Unripe), pus formed, and he healed after puncturing.
Puncture at the appropriate time to avoid massive ulceration. If drainage is difficult, use herbs to search out pus and transform toxins. If pus and blood are not exhausted, using flesh-generating agents prematurely will assist evil pathogens. Even if it closes early, it will recur. Do not be careless.
A man over fifty, frustrated by affairs, had left breast and hypochondriac swelling and pain. His Liver pulse was wiry, rapid, and choppy. He first took Longhui Wan (Dragon Gallbladder Pill) twice, alleviating symptoms... [Text fragment] to resolve depression. He did not listen and instead mixed Qi-regulating and detoxifying herbs, leading to constipation, fever, and thirst. Upon re-consultation, I said: "Pus formed but did not ulcerate due to yang qi deficiency failing to urge it; constipation and fever due to yin blood exhaustion failing to moisten." I declined treatment, and he indeed died.
A man, due to anger, had left breast swelling and pain. His Liver pulse was wiry and rapid. He took Fuyuan Tongqi San (Restoring Origin Qi-Regulating Powder) twice, improving slightly. Then, after several doses of Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) added with Qingpi (Tangerine Peel Unripe), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Rhizoma et Radix), and Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), it resolved.
