Fetal crying in the womb, with a sound like a bell, is called "Zi Ti" (Fetal Crying). This occurs because there is a mass in the mother's abdomen that the fetus holds in its mouth. When the mother raises her hand to reach for something high up, the mass falls out of the fetus's mouth, causing it to cry as if hearing a bell sound. Ancient prescriptions use concentrated decoction of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), which the pregnant woman drinks to stop the crying. Another method: scatter coins on the ground and have the pregnant woman bend down to pick them up from the floor; this causes the mass to re-enter the fetus's mouth, and the crying stops spontaneously. This method is even more ingenious.
During the third to fifth months of pregnancy, sudden loss of voice and inability to speak is called "Zi Yin" (Pregnancy Aphonia). This is due to the obstruction of the collateral vessels of the Bao Organ (Uterus). The collateral vessels of the Bao Organ connect to the Shaoyin Meridian of the Kidney, which passes through the Kidney and connects to the root of the tongue; hence, speech is impaired. This condition cannot be cured by medicine alone. Wait until the tenth month is full and delivery occurs; then speech will return naturally. Medication is not necessary.
In the eighth or ninth month of pregnancy, difficulty in urination occurs due to Qi deficiency failing to support the fetus. The weight of the fetus compresses the Paopao (Urinary Bladder), displacing it to one side, causing the bladder ligaments to twist and preventing urine discharge. This is called "Zhuan Bao" (Displaced Bladder). If the fetus is lifted and suspended centrally, the bladder ligaments relax, and the urinary pathway opens spontaneously. Shen Zhu Yin (Ginseng and Atractylodes Decoction) is indicated. If excessive eating damages Qi and the fetal ligaments, causing the weakened ligaments to fail in supporting the fetus, leading to downward compression of the bladder, urinary retention, and abdominal swelling, Shen Zhu Er Chen Tang (Ginseng, Atractylodes, and Two-Chen Decoction) is indicated. Another method: invert the pregnant woman vertically; the fetus will naturally shift position, and urine will flow out spontaneously. This is also effective.

Excessive indulgence in alcohol and sexual activity during pregnancy damages the Bao Men (Gate of the Uterus) internally, causing heat to accumulate in the Pangguang (Urinary Bladder). This leads to dribbling and painful urination, accompanied by mental restlessness and irritability. This is called "Zi Lin" (Pregnancy Strangury). If there is painful, scanty urination, Anrong San (Anrong Powder) is indicated. If internal injury from sexual exertion causes difficult urination, Shenqi Wan (Kidney-Qi Pill) is indicated. If Qi deficiency causes shortness of urine volume, Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) is indicated (formula see previous section on Zi Qi). If Blood deficiency causes scanty, obstructed urination, Zishen Wan (Nourish-Kidney Pill) is indicated. If heat binds in the Pangguang causing obstruction, Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is indicated. If Liver and Kidney deficient heat causes strangury, Zhibai Siwu Tang (Anemarrhena, Phellodendron, and Four Substances Decoction) is indicated. If Lung meridian stagnant heat is present, Huangqin Qingfei Yin (Scutellaria Lung-Clearing Decoction) is indicated. If caused by rich, greasy food intake, Qingwei Yin (Stomach-Clearing Decoction) is indicated.
