Generally speaking, fever caused by deficiency of Yuan Qi (Original Qi) is characterized by true cold inside and false heat outside. In such cases, simply using Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction), or Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with Pao Jiang (Prepared Ginger) to warm and tonify Spleen Qi will cause all symptoms to subside spontaneously. If there is aversion to cold in the four limbs, Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) should be added urgently. Therefore, for new postpartum women whose Yin Blood has been suddenly injured, causing Yang to have no anchor and float outward leading to external heat, Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) with Pao Jiang (Prepared Ginger) is suitable, aiming to tonify Yin to harmonize with Yang. If the external heat results from mistakenly taking cold and purgative medicines, this is due to Cold Qi repelling Yang to the exterior; Si Jun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) with Pao Jiang (Prepared Ginger) and Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark) is appropriate, adding Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root) urgently if there is no improvement. If there is skin heat, redness of the face and eyes, irritability, thirst, and desire to drink, this is restlessness caused by blood loss; Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang (Angelica Sinensis Tonifying Blood Decoction) should be used. If fever occurs due to excessive blood loss, the symptoms must include irritability, thirst, shortness of breath, headache, dizziness, mental confusion, and internal heat; this also belongs to the category of Yin deficiency, and Ren Shen Dang Gui Tang (Ginseng and Angelica Decoction) is suitable (formula see under "Yin Deficiency Fever" above).

Postpartum alternating chills and fever are generally caused by deficiency and damage of Qi and Blood, and disharmony of Yin and Yang. If Yang prevails, there is alternating heat; if Yin prevails, there is alternating cold. If Yin prevails and cold is predominant, Zeng Sun Si Wu Tang (Modified Four Substance Decoction) and Li Yin Jian (Regulating Yin Decoction) are suitable (formula see under "Exogenous Fever" before). If Yang prevails and heat is predominant, Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction) and San Yin Jian (Three Yin Decoction) are suitable (formula see under "Qi Deficiency Fever" above). If Yang Qi sinks into Yin causing alternating chills and heat, Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) and Bu Yin Yi Qi Jian (Tonify Yin and Augment Qi Decoction) are suitable (formula see under "Exogenous Fever" before). If both Yin and Yang are deficient causing alternating chills and heat, Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) and Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (Great Tonification Decoction of Ten Ingredients) are suitable (formula see under "Yin Deficiency Fever" before). If retained blood (stasis) fails to disperse and flows into Yin causing chills and heat, Jue Jin Jian (Crossing the Ford Decoction) and Dian Bao Jian (Stabilizing the Womb Decoction) are suitable.
