When men and women are in harmony, and mutual desire is aroused, only then should intercourse take place. In this way, Yang exerts and Yin receives, leading to the formation of the embryo, thus enabling conception. If the man's desire has reached its peak but the woman's mind is not yet moved, their bodies may just touch, yet the woman's fluids (vaginal secretions) will flow out first. Although the man ejaculates, the woman does not receive it (conception fails). If the woman's desire has reached its peak but the man's will is different (lack of interest), it is like peach waves churning in vain without jade dew dropping; although the woman's Yin blood is open (physiologically prepared), the man's Yang cannot enter. This is akin to the "Pi" hexagram where Heaven and Earth do not interact; how can myriad things be generated?
Heaven and Earth must have specific times for generating life, and the transformation of all things must have moments of joyful nurturing. Even tiny animals like cats and dogs, when about to conceive, the female will cry wildly and run and jump, unable to stop herself due to being touched by the Qi of joyful nurturing. This is the true mechanism of biological generation according to the seasons of Heaven and Earth. When a woman's menstruation ends, there is a day when a structure resembling the stamen of a lotus flower protrudes from the uterus. Her breath feels steaming and hot, her spirit is dull and stifled, and she has an unbearable urge for intercourse. This is the sign of fertilization and conception. Acting against this timing may lead to forming "Dan" (a Daoist alchemical term, here implying abnormal conception or pathology), while following it leads to conception. However, women often feel shy and refuse to speak of it. Men must guide them beforehand, allowing them to express it themselves, so that success can be achieved in one attempt.
The Jade Lake (metaphor for the female vagina) should be shallowly traversed; shallowness benefits the woman, while heavy burdening (deep penetration) becomes a worry, causing injury if too deep. Yin blood gathers first, meaning the woman's blood (secretions) come first; Yang essence flows later, meaning the man's semen arrives subsequently. Red flowers holding jade dew: when blood wraps around semen, a male child is born. Walking flatly to Yingzhou (a mythical immortal island, symbolizing smooth progress): rising straight up leads to conception.
Before men and women engage in intercourse, the man experiences three arrivals (San Zhi): The penis becoming vigorous, erect, and trembling indicates the arrival of Liver Qi; becoming enlarged and hot indicates the arrival of Heart Qi; becoming firm, strong, and lasting indicates the arrival of Kidney Qi. When all three are present, it pleases the woman. If impotence occurs without erection, it means Liver Qi has not arrived. Forcing intercourse before Liver Qi arrives damages the sinews, resulting in semen dripping rather than ejecting. If the penis is large but not hot, it means Heart Qi has not arrived. Forcing intercourse before Heart Qi arrives damages the blood, resulting in cold and clear semen. If it is firm but not lasting, it means Kidney Qi has not arrived. Forcing intercourse before Kidney Qi arrives damages the bones, resulting in no ejaculation, or very little if it does occur. Those seeking offspring should value reducing desires and clearing the mind to nourish the Qi of the Liver, Heart, and Kidneys.
